Why do older AVR's only do 2.1 through Digital coax? there is an optical input but my DVDP does not have optical

I have never had nor heard of a receiver that treats digital coax differently from optical, they both are capable of carrying the same data, at the same quality. Which AVR do you have?

Just an ordinary RCA receiver from 2003. I am currently about to buy a sony to replace it. I bought a 5.1 speaker-set and the pawnbroker threw an RCA RT600 reciver (the one recalled for "overheating due to poor ventelation"


It works fine and does not really overheat, I kept the RCA receiver to start-out with and then graduate to a better, receiver
