Hi,


Since I always end up here when looking for help on this type of issue, I figured it was time to join.


Beyond that, I have what could be considered an ancient HD set. It's a Samsung tube, 4:3, and does 480p and 1080i, model # TXM3296/7HF. Up until I had my 360, I never used anything other than 480p. Nothing I had supported it. I bought in 2003, so I'm well out of warranty.


Well, when I picked up the 360 and started playing in 1080i, I noticed faded lines running down the left side of the screen. These only show up when in 1080i, as did some rather nasty geometry issues. I shrugged the lines off as it wasn't terrible, just a small annoyance. The geometry issues I kinda/sorta fixed myself through the service menu. Note the lines were there long before I started playng with buttons.

Now I have the HD-DVD player, and I can't ignore it anymore. They're far more noticeable when there's a brighter image. In fact, when it's dark, they're not visible at all. I'm sure they're still there, but can't be seen. I don't know if the lines are getting worse or I'm getting more annoyed by the day.


I've dabbled in the main menu with no options, and then learned of the service menu. Having no clue what 80% of that stuff meant, I didn't do much other than fix those geometry issues.


So, anyone know what the cause could be? Better yet, know what a fix could be?

Hmmm. Maybe TV is being underscanned while in 1080i setting. I remember reading about this issue with other 360 users. If none of your picture is being cropped off as it is you should be able to hide the lines by messing with the overscan (HSIZ,HPOS parameters) in the service menu.

So that's area of the screen I'm not supposed to be seeing? There is defnitely a portion of the picture over there. I'll try moving it over and see if it cuts anything off.

Another way to look at it might be that you have too little overscan. Have you calibrated the set properly? If not, the first, best thing to do is invest in Avia or DVE and calibrate the set. You can do this from your HD DVD player as these are calibration dvds.


I've also got an older set, a TXN2745. There was also a 32" model for this too. One problem with these older sets, especially the 32" models are weak power supplies. One result of a weak or dying PS is blooming, which could also describe your problem.


Which picture mode are you using (Custom, Dynamic, etc) and what are your video settings in the user menu? In the meantime order one of the calibration dvds as this is your best bet. If it doesn't help then you know you have a h/w problem.

I used, I believe, a Home Theater Magazine disc. Actually found it for rent at the library. Even if I got it again, the HD-DVD player doesn't upscale unless it's a VGA connection (which my TV doesn't have), and I can't make changes without actually being in that resolution. Everything was set under 480p, and the lines aren't there in that mode. I have no idea how long this problem has been there either. It was probably there when it was in warranty too.

That was something I was afraid of. Could it be a bad outlet? Someone also mentioned to me elsewhere that it could be interference from something else. I have well over 25 things hooked up at once, possibly even 30. Everything is right in the same area. If that a possibility and is there anything to do? Wouldn't it be shielded against stuff like that?

I use custom. Color is around 60, brightness around 35-45 depending on what I'm watching, contrast at 50, sharpness at 15-20.


As for correcting it in the service menu, if I do that, it chops off a lot of the screen. For some games, I can lose over half the HUD if the area with the lines is gone. It's defnitely information that's needed.


I thought about having it professionaly calibrated, but I plan on buying a new set and can't see it being worth the money for what that would cost.
