Hey guys, first venture in tube amps and I am very excited! My question is: Can I run my ONIX SP3 speaker outs to the speaker ins on my MFW-15's and then out to my Rocket 850's? Is it okay to run a tube amp through subs and then on to the mains? And last, is this the tool I need for the bias tweaks?

Thanks guys!

I'd run two sets of wires directly out of the amp - one to the speaker and one to the sub. That will keep the wires to the speakers as short as possible.

Sounds like a nice setup.

The crossover point though. I don't want double overlapping bass.

And how would wiring to the subs first prevent that? Those subs have no crossovers that work for external speakers. If you want to prevent lower frequencies from playing on the 850s you'll need an external crossover.

Using line level speaker output to a sub means the only control you have is what is on the sub - usually a knob that goes from 40-50hz to 150hz - that is unless you have subwoofer control on the amp - which I doubt.

I have no idea what double overlapping bass is. Can you explain this concept?

Running wires as you've described it only serves to make the wire runs longer for the speakers. Shorten the run as much as possible.

I was under the impression that if I turned the crossover knob to 60-80Hz that the speakers would be fed everything above that and I would be able to control the volume of the subs/speakers using the volume dial on the SP3. Seeing is how the signal would be coming from the SP3 I figured that it would basically output the same as an old receiver that didn't have a LFE or SUB out and needed to use the sub to set the X-overs. I could be WAAAAY off here so I appreciate the input. By 2x bass I meant that the sub would be playing 20-80Hz and the mains would be playing 30Hz-30KHz doubling the bass from 30Hz-80Hz together and possibly cancelling out those frequencies.

Unless the MFW-15 has a specific crossover built in, and I don't know that they do or don't - you would need an external crossover to prevent bass signals from going to the speakers. I can see why you would want this - your int/amp only has about 40wpc IIRC - those Rockets will suck that up like I do a cold beer on a hot day.

AV123 doesn't have the MFW-15 manual posted - they say to use the UFW-10 manual. I see no way of controling speaker crossovers from that. For something thats been discontinued they should at least be able to provide an on-line manual. The UFW-10 doesn't even have the speaker level input posts - the MFW-15 does have that.

Thanks so much for pointing this out. I'll give the guys at AV123 a call today because I'm sure they've came across questions like this before back in the day. I have the Emotiva XPA-5 powering the 850's from a PIO ELITE but after hearing my uncle's tube amp, I fell in love. EMO and the PIO are a force in home theater but I'm looking for finesse with my music.
