This is just an FYI

A few hours ago i had the opportunity to compare the two systems at Frys.

Both systems were NOT setup properyl,

Both had ONLY stereo INPUT FEED .

Both had the same input feed from the same source.

I used switched both systems to Dolby Pro logic 2 Music.

The 780 had a relatively fantastic bass. but the highs were extremely prominent. There was this prominent hiss from the speakers that was totally absent from the 870. Therefore I kind of got the feeling that the 870 was extremely crisp than the 780 however i think the difference in my opinion was not worth the extra $200.

the 870 is last years THX version of the 770, but the speakers aren't THX certified, so technically the 870 should sound exactly the same as the 770. i've never heard the 870, or the the 780, so i can't say how they compare. i have heard the 780 sounds pretty good, and that Onkyo is improving the quality of their speakers.

i would say don't waste you're time with the 870, and go with the 780. that hiss you heard could have easily been caused by something in the store, the only real way to test it out is to take it home and hook it up...
