Onkyo 804 HDMI on-screen menu problem

When I select the setup menu on my Onkyo TX-SR804 receiver, I get a screen full of static black and white rectangles on my projector display (panasonic ae900) when using hdmi. It is fine using component inputs. Onkyo say it is fine on a HDMI tv. It is the same result whether or not there is anything plugged into the HDMI input on the receiver.

Does anyone else with this combination see the same effect?
