So I have this older model (TX-DS696) and I just bought M&K speakers that go down to 80hz. I also bought an SVS PB12ISD/2 sub. I just want to make sure I get the crossover right. I read numerous posts, including posts from the archives and there seems to be conflicting information regarding the crossover if the sub is set to ON or OFF.

In my manual it says the following...

Large: The complete frequency range for the channel you are setting

will be output from the speaker.

Small: Frequencies of the channel you are setting lower than 80 Hz

will be output from the subwoofer. If the front speakers are set to

“Large,†then the sound may be output from both the left and right

speakers.

So from that I guess I should set my speakers to SMALL and with the sub set to ON anything under 80hz will go to my sub. Am I understanding this correctly?? Has anyone confirmed this with a meter for this Onkyo model?

Any info greatly appreciated.

That is the designed behavior, yes. I haven't actually confirmed it with a scope, I just assume it works as they say it does.

If your new mains are only rated to 80hz, you probably want to cross over at a higher frequency. The crossover isn't a brick wall, it's a steep slope. Some of the signal under 80hz will go to the speakers, and some OVER 80hz will go to the sub, if the crossover point is 80hz. If the mains will only do 80, then you will be losing some sound. If you set it higher, like at 100, you should get better results.

If your mains go down to at least 60, then 80 is a fine crossover point.
