I am looking to upgrade my TX1008 to a newer unit. I can get the 1100 for a few hundred more than the 840, but I am wondering if it it worth it for the 4k upscaling, more power, and class d amp. I know the 1100 is a few years old, but wasn't sure what everyone's opinion on this unit was. I would assume that the few new features on the 840 can be had on the 1100 with a simple firmware update? Or are these more in the way of new hardware?

Thanks

On the same boat here.
Its a pitty Onkyo hasnt released the 1200/1300/1400 equivalents for 2017, 2018, 2019.
I guess almost 4 years old 1100 is not a good buy today, even the D amp.
If you are able I would wait for the release of the next thousand iteration, but you will have to pay the extra $$$ for the New Hardware, that would be higher than todays 840.
I am not able to wait. I have to buy on 2-Sep, so unless someone gives a good answer to your post, I will be buying the 840.

I own the rz3100 that launched alongside the rz1100, while new models may have some new features, keep in mind they don't have the marvel qdeo 4k upscaling chipset that the rz1100/3100 has, it's a very good hardware upscaler, I use it on my oled TV.
The rz1100/3100 processing is very good, the amp section is mixed bag, it doesn't provide as much punch as a class a/b, but at the same time it is cleaner sounding than class a/b (lower noise floor). I also have an Onkyo nr818, so that's how i am drawing the class d vs. class a/b amplifier comparison.

If you can find rz1100 at discounted price (it's a three year old model), then buy it,unless there is a specific new feature on the newer models that you must have.

Do you really need the 4K upscaler? I dont care for that since I dont need to watch the news in crystal clear 4K. In fact, I own an AVR with 4K Upscaler and prefer to turn it off.

I too have been looking seriously at the rz830, rz920 and lx503 for my setup. The rz1100 does look good on paper, has class D power and for now is still getting firmware updates for earc, etc. but is a few years old.

Depending on your speakers you might hear the difference in a/b vs class D, but probably not from the power difference itself.

The big difference to me is that the rz1100 will probably never get the new rz740/840 hdmi board and circuits. That feels like Onkyo (new ownership) might have turned the corner, fixed the past issues and are looking to get back into the reliability conversation with Yamaha. They have always had good features for the money and accueq and lack of dual sub control seems to be an oversight at this price point, but rz830 owners generally seem to like the power and what accueq does in their rooms.

There is an open box rz740 and rz1100 that I posted in the deals thread https://www.avsforum.com/forum/122-...o-web-deals-nr686-rz820-920-1100-prz5100.html
