Onkyo TX Sr393 or Onkyo HT R980

So I purchased an Onkyo TX SR393 from Best Buy about a year ago it’s kinda meh. Today I acquired an older Onkyo HT R980 with corresponding home theater system. What I had for speakers before was junk I mean really junk. It was a mish mash of old Sony speakers. My question is do I use the new HT 980 speakers with the R980 receiver or should I use the newer SR393 receiver?
