Onkyo TX-SR601 - NO Sound

I just finally got around to trying to set this up. I'm pretty sure I connected all the speakers correctly but still no sound. I have an optical cable from the digital audio out of the STB to the digital audio in of the Onkyo receiver. No sound, I'm sure it could be a dozen things wrong but maybe someone can start me on a few reasons it doesn't work. Mute is off, settings on small speakers. ????

did you do a "test tone" from the receiver?


did you tell the STB to out put in pcm, or digital?


did you assign the optical input to the correct input location on the 601?


what does the receiver display say it is receiving?
