Hey guys,

I'm having a bit of an issue getting 5.1 (or 6.1 if i can) audio with BluRays. I have a 8300 chipset, an Onkyo Tx-DS787 using PowerDVD.

It is supposed to handle PCM over spdif, which is how I'm setup right now. The receiver is saying "PCM Digital" and it's on the "direct" setting. PowerDVD's stats says:

Audio: Dolby TrueHD 5.1

Output: LPCM 48KHz/16bits 6 channels

DS787 spec sheet: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-OlRmU3G...=detailed_info

FFDshow audio settings: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/..._FFDshow_1.png

..yet I'm only getting two channels. I'm assuming its a decoding issue since the receiver can't handle most of the new codecs. It is supposed to be able to take 96kbps/32bit (Is that a huge sound difference?) I think it can only handle Dolby DTS and THX Surround EX (see spec link above for full list). When I run a DTS or Dolby D test in the Win7 sound properties, I get the full 5.1 audio. I've tried two different BluRays but still only 2 channels.

Any ideas? Could I just output DTS to the receiver instead of PCM? Would that make a huge sound quality difference? I'm assuming this is a codec issue? Thanks!

SPDIF has a maximum of 2 channels PCM.

So you need to switch to DD or DTS bitstreaming if you want more.

Yes but only for the HD versions of DD and dts. Plain vanilla lossy DD and dts 5.1 are fine on S/PDIF connections.
