Opinions on the KEF's

I heard the Kef 3005 speakers at Circuit City and was pretty impressed. I was wondering what some of the other folks on this site feel about them?

KEF is pretty decent and the ones you've chosen to audition do a good job.

When you get into their Reference line, they get very expensive and they do not live up to their price.
I really like the iQ series, specifically the iQ9. I didn't have a chance to really turn them up so I don't know how they handle high volumes. But at lower levels they were quite smooth.

I have been using the KEF Reference One for about 7 years. While nothing about their sound quality stood out at first listening, they are the kinda speakers that you can live with for a long long time. They don't have sizzling high, forward midrange or extremely deep bass but they do sound really smooth - this is why many people don't like them after some auditioning, I believe. While some speakers are suitable for certain kinds of music, my KEFs seem to do well in almost all kinds of music. That's why I have had them for a long time. Before having the Reference One, I had owned AR 303, Sonus Faber Concertino and NHT 3.3 - these speakers were excellent in their own ways. The AR 303s, for me, had the bass that could rival most subwoofers and were perfect for rock and Hip Hop. The Concertino made most music sound beautiful. The 3.3 were dead accurate and had to-die-for details - I still regret selling them.

Anyway, let's get back on track with the OP. I haven't heard much of the new KEF but if they sound similar to their old lines, you should check them out. And keep in mind that to choose the right speakers, spend a lot of times on auditioning.

I listened to the KEF iQ9 speakers last week. They did sound good at the highs and mids, but they seemed to be lacking in the bass area. Though they are not for me, they are a nice looking speaker and if you add a sub, I am sure they will sound good together.
