I was told that there is no difference in quality in the optical digital audio cable when I purchased my DVD player. I have a Panasonic rp-91 DVD hooked up to a Yamaha rx-v496 receiver with a Bose Acoustimass 15. The salesman said "either the light gets through or it doesn't" It seemed to make sense at the time but after reading this web site, should I upgrade the cable from the DVD to the Yamaha? If so, what is the best optical cable?

No, you shouldn't upgrade. If you do, I'd doubt you'd hear any difference at all. And if you did, it would be very, very subtle and subjective. Now if you need a cable that goes 50-100meters or so, then GOF (glass optical fiber) might be in order rather than typical plastic fiber, but I doubt that's the case. I laugh (and cry) when I see advertisements for optical cables that are gold plated.

Anyway, with Bose speakers you'll never hear the difference anyway. :)
