i have a rca 38in hdtv it has optical out on it , i have a kenwood av receiver, i have my sony dvd optical going to a optical splitter on the other side i have the rca going to the splitter i have the out of the splitter going to the receiver, when i turn on the dvd 5.1 surround is great. when i turn on the rca to watch tv ( with the dvd off ) the sound on the receiver goes in and out , i have my audio setting on the tv set to pcm cause if i set them on digital i get no sound , any ideas?

Have you tried switching the two inputs to the splitter around? Perhaps there is something wrong with one of the legs of the splitter. Just a thought.

Just thought of something else. If your "optical splitter", is indeed a splitter, it may not operate as a combiner, as you are using it. The flow may only be intended to go in one direction.

Thax to those that answered, It was a bad splitter. One of the input sides was bad.I got a new splitter now all is fixed....
