I recently purchaced a Yamaha HTR5960B reciever, and a pair of Totem Rainmaker speakers. For the time being I'm using this setup as a stereo set up for movies, music, games, etc. I'm wondering if I go to use optical, on the sources that would that to output in surround/DTS, if I set the receiver to 2ch Stereo, would I loose any sound due to the source being in durround/DTS from the source sending the front channel signal to the receiver?

Thanks in advance

If you have only L and R mains you will not hear the surround and LFE channels. You can have a phantom center channel without a center speaker. The side and rear surrounds require speakers.

Edit-- There are processing schemes that create a 5.1 "experience" such as Dolby Virtual Speaker for PCs and the infamous Bose, with just two speakers. I don't know if Yamaha has that though.
