I received the "good deal" from circuit city after returning the home theater system. My wife refused to have towering speakers that remind her stone hinge.

I purchased the sony dav is50 home theater because of its golfball speakers. The problem with this unit is it doesn't have any HDMI inputs, only HDMI1 output. It does have an optical input.

My question is: If I connect my hd cable box, and possibly a blu ray player, and TIVO in the future to the HDMI inputs on the tv, will the optical out transmit 5.1 audio to the home theater, or will it only be 2.1. I have heard both answers.

My other option is to return the is50 and get the hts2300 and blu ray 550 combo from costco for about 700.

Thanks for the input

Get the IS100, it has 3 HDMI 1.3 inputs. Same golf ball speakers.

And I'd recommend you get a PS3 as a bluray/dvd player, it's way better for bluray than anything else you can get for the money, and even if you don't game its a bargain as a video player.

Mitchell_> Thank you for waiting, Allenfdavis. I'll be glad to assist you with the information about the Audio Out jack of the TV.

Mitchell_> Please stay online while I check this information for you.

Mitchell_> Please stay with me. It'll be a bit longer. I'm still checking.

allenfdavis> of course, the devices will support 5.1

Mitchell_> Thank you for waiting, Allenfdavis.

Mitchell_> The Digital OUT jack of the TV can output 5.1 audio signals only for VHF/UHF input of the TV.

Mitchell_> The Digital OUT jack of the TV will output 2.1 audio signals for the HDMI inputs.

allenfdavis> so not the hdmi connections

Mitchell_> Yes, that's right.

allenfdavis> is there a way to get 5.1 out from the tv?

Mitchell_> No, Allenfdavis.

wow, a csr that gave you the right information. The optical out on the TV will only send 5.1 from OTA-over the air signals. All other sources are 2 channel.

HTIB systems are notorious for lacking enough inputs to satisfy most people and also being underpowered to drive anything but the speakers that came with the system, making upgrading a pain if not impossible. I'd recommend taking it back and getting a basic receiver with the inputs you need. They are fairly inexpensive now especially if you are wiling to go with a used or refurbished unit, you can find good deals on Onkyo, Marantz, Denon, HK, Yamaha and Sony although I'm not a Sony audio component fan. Then add the speakers that you want with it. Gives you much more flexibility, you don't have to worry about maxing your inputs out and a much better performing system in the end.

Due to HDCP you cannot output 5.1 from the TV from any HDMI source.

As for the wife complaining about big speakers, explain how buying that setup is like taking money for a Mercedes and just handing it all over for a low end Hyundai. By using those speakers you will greatly regret the amount of sound quality lost by having such small speakers and drivers. For he money spent you can piece together a decent system. Research in the audio forums and you will not regret it.
