I am in the process of building a HTPC and currently pursuing a optical sound card.. What are the current popular optical sound cards being used for HTPC's??

Thanks

I have a similar question/problem. I output my SBLive out a riser card to a toslink converter to my Yamaha 5.1 system, and no matter what I do it reads it as an analogue source. The best audiophile cards, as near as I can tell, are the Terratec DMX cards, but I don't know if they output a true digital signal. My DVD has much better sound with its digital out.

I also saw this, which seems a good, cheap sound solution if you're not looking to run games:

I couldn't find any reviews on the technology.

I am using an M-Audio Sonica, which is hooked up via USB (you can save yourself a pci slot for something else). You should be able to get one for about $60 shipped.

Yes, an external sound card has a big advantage over an internal one due to internal interference. I found this in my search, which is the more expensive solution:

Dang, I bought a higher end Yamaha 5.1 receiver that I'd be loath to part with. But if you have a lot of money, and are using your PC as an integated component in your AVS system already... Full system integration can't be that far off.
