I am acquiring all new components and not sure about what receiver to best satisfy my needs. Components are Samsung DLP HL61A750 61" LED, Sony PS3, Comcast High Def Cable Box w/HDMI output, Onkyo speakers from older Onkyo 6.1 HTIB. Room is about 14' x 14' or 200 square feet, 8' ceiling. 11' viewing distance.

The current Onkyo HT-R510 receiver has no HDMI, hence the search for a new receiver.

1) Need upscaling? Maybe on a 61" it will. If so, 1080i OK, or 1080p visibly better?

2) Any chance upscaling, however weak, would make picture worse than original low resolution signal?

3) Do I need good upscaling in a receiver or can the TV or PS3 do it better?

4) Any potential downgrade to 1080p signal running through receiver (vs straight connection to TV)?

Looking at Onkyo TX-SR606, 706, 806, or, Yamaha RX-V663.

Thanks.

1) ps3 will do it fine for sd-dvd. hd cable will be 1080i unless converted by the receiver to 1080p--probably not much dif in pic qual.

2) not with decent video procesing like in the 806

3) ps3 will do fine for sddvd again upconverting to 1080p probably wont make much difference but also wont hurt

4) probably insignificant if at all with good processing in the avr

if i were you id go with the 806. great bang/buck esp if you plan on upgrading speakers in the future.

Thanks for your reply. I was strongly considering the 806, but have reservations (on 606 and 706 too), after reading about the "blue dot" problem that appears all too common.
