Optoma H31 Owners: OTB calibration?

2295 Views 23 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  fleaman
For all those who now have H31's, how have your Out-of-the-box calibrations been?

I know it's subjective to some extent, but I'm sure many can answer this to some degree.

The H30's have a bad rap for OTB calibrations being all over the place and for newbies (and even some more experienced), calibrating a projector can be time consuming

The better the OTB calibrations, the easier it is to tweak the calibrations a little to taste or Avia, etc.

The Infocus 4805 reports indicate it's OTB calibrations are fairly consistent and accurate (for an OTB projector) and the H31 reports seem to indicate better OTB calibrations than the H30's...at least.

So H31's owners, take the poll!

I would like to see someones settings after they calibrated it. I have never calibrated a TV or projector before, so I have no idea what I am doing. I would liket to take other's settings and see how it looks on my H31. Hopefully, it would give me a good starting point.

BTW: My vote was for "OTB Very good, just tiny adjustments to taste", but I think there can be some improvements if I knew what I was doing.
brightness/contrast/tint/saturation settings are different for every source - no point in posting those. It is also not a measure of how far off the display is - it is a measure of how far off your sources are. Every THX DVD has these adjustment patterns - learn to use it because nobody elses settings will work for you.

The setting that certainly can be shared are what are the number settings for white peaking, gamma, color temperature. Which are closer to standards, which do what. Tom has ColorFacts he should be able to provide that info.

The far off the box comments on the H30 came from those reviews that have calibration equipment for greyscale. This is not a subjective measure and not something you can do with your eyes. Again guitarman can provide this info thru his ColorFacts sessions. This is also something where somebody elses RGB settings will NOT help - every lamp has a different spectral nature, and every source is again different. And on the H30 it was found every firmware and nearly every SN had a different factory calibration.

So while this survey is fun - it really tells you that people either don't no how to adjust, or have perfect sources, or do not have calibration equipment, or they did and the box was perfect. Not very scientific - but fun!

I am sure guitarman will come back to his H31 after his H79 tweaking is done.

This survey is subjective of course. Some have calibration equip, some just Avia or DVE and others just their eyes!

But, myself being an H30 owner and calibrating 3 of them (my boss's H30 and 2 of my own), I can attest and many of the H30 owners can agree, many of the H30 OTB calibrations were all over the place. Some of them were way off mark....barely watchable. 2 of my H30's were like this, while my boss's (early firmware) was pretty darn good OTB, needing only some slight nudging here and there.

So, this subjective survey---while not being scientific, can at least give many of us an idea of how the H31 has been doing OTB, that's all.

For me, a quickie comparison for OTB calibrations has been my 27" CRT tv.

My TV is right below my screen, so I can have the TV on and the Projector on at the same time, easy to see the differences in colors and contrast, etc., and what to start adjusting.

But I agree with Krasmuzik, you can't really use anyone else’s calibration settings. None of the 3 H30's I calibrated could use each other’s #'s. Doing so would produce one horrid image. All 3 had drastically different settings.

Small screen TV's are the worst for calibration comparisons. The presets are so bad so that they stand out on the wall of TV's at the dept store! Standing out is not a good thing it is a bad thing!
Mine looked bad out of the box. The black level was high and had a brown tint to it. The colors were way too red. After avia things looked better but still not right. I have it pretty close now but still have some work to do. I'm probably more picky than most people though.

I guess my TV is just better than others (Preset wise). My TV's 'Theater' (or 'Film'?) preset settings are pretty darn good...and within that setting I can choose 'cool', 'medium' and 'warm' color temps. All I have to do after that is turn the brightness down just a notch or 2 and it's just about perfect.

But I agree, the 'Normal' preset is horrid! Super bright, washed out...probably for sports watching, I dunno.

And, I also know TV's are just brighter than a projector naturally, so I take that into account.

My H31 looked pretty good otb. First thing I did of course is grab the Avia dvd and first do the blacks/white/colors/sharpness in that order. Then I'd bring up a graysteps pattern and toggle the colortemps looking for the best grays. After that things looked good and I proceeded to take all those initial screen shots.

I'll post the numbers I got in tuning a progressive analog signal. But you'll have to alter the service area Picture & ADC settings also for that signal. It's a crap shoot if it works, but maybe. You could always return to the factory numbers that you wrote down. :)

I'll probably have the numbers up by tomorrow.
Only 14 H31 owners out there in avs land....?

My H31 just arrived today, and I still have to open the box. I'll let you all know my first impressions.
fleaman,

I tried to vote, but I guess since I'd already posted in this thread, the poll said that I'd already voted. Add me to the list of pretty good OTB, just a few adjustments to taste.
jedi35,

That's strange. You would think the voting and posting would be 2 different things. Maybe I can ask a moderator if this is a fact or not.

If you did vote (by mistake?) I'll see if the moderator can tell what your vote was.

Hmmmm.

I fell into the majority, great OTB but I'm sure I'll play a little to taste.
I have been playing around with the settings since I have had the projector, but that is just me. It took me only about 5 minutes to get it close to what it is set at now, and the tweaks I do now is just to pass the time as I wait for my wife to get herself snacks and such.

Like someone said above, my settings will not help anyone else, but I do have Contrast at 26, brightness at 25, and color at 15 I think (might be higher, there are different numbers for each source, but I think it is 15 for DVD movies) white peaking is at the lowest setting, gamma is at 1 and color temperature is the 2nd setting (was at 1 but I found that whites were more white, and less yellow at 2)

Of course, I have a M2500, which is going to effect the Contrast and brightness settings A LOT!
jedi35,

Moderator said you can post as many times as you want in this forum, but only vote once. Hence, his conclusion was that you must have voted already, somehow. I asked if he (moderator) can advise what your vote was (advise me or you or the forum), but no response yet.

I might be upgrading from my H30 to an H31, haven't really decided yet. Have a friend interested in my H30, but I would take a pretty good hit (dollars wise) when all is settled.

If I do get a H31, then of course I will vote too (in my own poll!), and maybe we will see if I run into the same problem as you.

Until then, we've got 18 votes now, keep 'em coming!

Well, something is screwed up, because I remember telling myself to take the poll when I first got the pj. However, I was so busy watching that I didn't get around to it, then you reminded me to do it in a post. I then went to the thread to vote, and got the message that I'd already voted. Funny. When I posted in the thread the first time, I hadn't voted yet.....I didn't have anything to report. The box wasn't even open yet.

So, this means that I cannot be counted in the 18 unless you added one to the registered votes.
