Orb Audio vs. Anthony Gallo...anyone?

31364 Views 28 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  ScubaCA
Tried doing a search but came up with very little in terms of a comparison between the two.

Has anyone else been able to demo the two of them? Are there main advantages of one over the other (I assume price of the Orbs are lower than that of teh Adiva's).

Thanks!

I've read the above link and am wondering if there's much sound difference at all between the Orbs and the Nucleus Micros. I know Gary helped design both, but different drivers can make similar speakers sound different. Anyone have experience trying out both side to side?

The reason I'm asking is that I have the Micros for all 5 channels and a friend is interested in them too, but I'm also trying to make sure he can get the best deal for his money. If the Orbs are basically the same, I'll tell him to go that way as he'd need a sub too (I already had an SVS and all other equipment) and save some mula for the receiver, wiring, and stands. Both would have to be ordered on-line, as there's no Gallo dealer nearby and we can access their website (where they are sold at MSRP).

TIA.
Have your buddy skip the dealer markups on the Gallo and go w/ the Orbs. They sound as good or better to my ear and the business model makes a lot of sense if you aren't getting local service on the Gallos anyhow.
Most of my Gallo experience has been with their 'Due' speakers.....I felt they were severely overpriced. When I heard them I thought they sounded okay for a $600 speaker....then the guy told me they were $600 EACH, not per pair. That totally changed my mind about them. I lke their CDT tweeter enough that I'd pay six bills for the pair, but not $1200.....no way.

I'd go with the Orbs if I were you.
most of [my] experience with Gallo is with the Ernest & Julio type.

Best equipment tweak ever!

Thanks for the responses- pretty much what I expected. I'll tell him to order the Orbs when he gets around to buying some. I think the Gallo stands would work with them and are cheaper (and better looking imho). It also gives me a chance to do some good comparisons too...
Does anyone know for sure if the Gallo floor stands work with the Orbs?
A review of the Orb-1's versus the Gallo A'Diva Ti's coming soon. I have 3 of the original Gallo Nucleus speakers in my living room 5.1 setup. I got the Ti's last week and broke them in over the weekend. Got the Orbs on Monday and they're breaking in as we speak.

Won't have any final decisions on my part until another week or so. However, a little info with initial impressions. The Ti's are bigger and heavier than the Nucleus and the Orbs are about the same size as the Nuc's. Didn't figure this would be a fair match really especially with the Ti's costing twice as much and much meatier units. When I fired the Ti's up - initially very disappointed: closed in sound, no highs, lack of detail, smearing of instruments. However, after 30 hours of breakin there is a big difference!

The smaller, lighter (I thought when I got the package from UPS that they only sent me 1 maybe 2 Orbs and not all 3 it was so lite) Orbs when first hooked up really shocked me with how much more open sounding at first play! I'm waiting to see/hear what happens after 30 hours of breakin....................

Cheers,

daggerNC

Orb Audio says that their speakers take the standard 1/4"-20 threaded insert, and so does Gallo. I'd post the links but I'm under 5 posts, so you need to look at the stands page on Orb's site (look at the stock stand description that comes with it) and the pdf manual for the Micros. The Gallo stands come with a nut to tighten the speaker against so you can get the correct orientation (clocking) of up or down (like spherical speakers need it- I just used it to get the inputs where I wanted them to with respect to the wire openings).

DaggerNC- my Micros seemed to take a while to break in. I know that there's a large discussion on whether or not speakers actually do require it, but these seemed to needed some time before they started expanding their low frequency extension. It's taken about 6 months, but I rarely play them loud and for long periods of time, but now if the sub's off, I can still hear a the higher frequencies of a bass drum in music, whereas before, I couldn't.
waiting for your review..i'd like to order my system next week.....
Review is still on my todo list for this thread. I've expanded my auditioning + wife is having us redo 2 rooms + back to school for the kids = not enough time.

That said, they both do some things right; there are measurable differences; they both don't do a couple of things that are critical for me..............
Did you order subs from each company too? The Orb sub rules.

It's gotta be better than the Gallo one....their sub is a piece of overpriced crap. When I heard it with a couple of dues, I thought it was going to collapse.
guys, do you think the Gallo ceiling mount will work for the Orbs?

Hi Dreamon72,

I've just bought a set of orbs and wanted to see if I could use the Gallo ceiling mounts for the rear surround speakers. The specs said the orbs were 4 3/16" diameter vs 4" for the Anthony gallo micros so thought the would only be 5mm in difference and I could bore them out a bit. So took a chance and bought two anthony gallo micro ceiling mounts. They wouldn't sell me just one but had to buy two, cost me AUD$149 for the pair (absolute extortion for what are two bits of plastic !!). On initally fitting the Orb into the two peices of the mount had at least a 20mm gap between the front cover/outer ring and the inner section when the speaker was in place, which was a bit scary at first. First step was to gradually widen the diameter of the hole in front cover/out ring with a Dremel grinding tool to about 106mm, keep checking as you as you don't want to go too far otherwise the speaker will fall through. Then widen up base hole to around the same diameter. As you gradually widen up the base keep on checking with speaker in place to see if you can lock the two pieces together. First one took a bit of time, but once I had the dimensions the second one took half the time.

When in the mount the orb seems capable of a bit more tilt than the pictures I seen of the Gallos, so might give a bit better sound direction.

I'm yet to install the speaker in my ceiling as waiting for house to be finished, but the end result should look pretty good.

Share some pictures when you install them. My house is ready to move in but still not decided what mount to use. Good luck Rabjam!

Its going to be another two months before speaker installed so I'll try and take some picture of the modification I made to the Gallo mounts to fit my orb speakers.
