Original Playstation system link question...

2006 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Anthony1
I was reading a really old issue of DieHard GameFan. It was from early 1995. In the issue, they had a preview of Destruction Derby for the original Playstation. This was prior to the release of the Playstation on 9-9-95. In the preview, they talked about how you could link 8 different playstation systems together for the same ( link cable compatible ) game. They said that you needed 8 TV's, 8 copies of the game, 8 controllers and 8 Playstations.

I'm guessing that this information was incorrect, because as far as I'm aware, you can only link two Playstation systems together. Not more than 2. I have a Playstation link cable and a few old PS1 systems, and I've used the link cable to play Doom and Wipeout, and it works great, but I don't know of any way to actually hook up more than 2 PS1 systems together. Is there some type of serial cable router switcher or something? Or was the feature left on the cutting room floor before the PS1 was released? In the issue of GameFan, they talk about it very matter-of-factly. If it's possible to actually link up 8 PS1 systems, that's pretty sweet. I know it's a really old system that nobody really cares about anymore, but I sometimes play the PS1 with my kids and they could care less that it's a 14 year old system.

According to this FAQ for the link cable, no more than two setups can be connected to each other, sorry.

However the multi tap peripheral allowed up to four players to connect to each controller port. That means up to 8 players on one system and 16 players on two setups connected with the link cable. Perhaps some titles will allow you to at least get four players over two setups (split screen).

I see. Hmm. It appears that in the GameFan issue, they actually tested the game with it linked to a total of 8 Playstations somehow, but Sony must have removed that feature before the launch of the PS1. Thats what I figured. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't some trick I wasn't aware of.
