Orpheous speakers versus Monitor Audio

504 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Nuance
Hi there,

Thinking of buying some new speakers and have narrowed it down to Monitor Audio RS 6 or 8s

or

Orpheus Aurora 3 (Australian speakers)

I am trying not to rely on information from sales buys in the niche audio shops as they have their own brands.

They are priced at the same point and have best in class reviews but I am little concerned over the resale value of the lesser known Orpheous speakers.

Any thoughts on the matter?

cheers

I like the Monitor Audio RS6, especially for the price. They also stay within +/- 5dB or so on the FR. Here is a link to the recent Stereophile review of them:

I have never heard the Orpheous speakers so I cannot comment on them.
I've had the monitor audio gr60's, gr10's and gold center for about a year now.

Having never heard the silver line, all I can say is, if they are anywhere near as good as the gold line, your going to be hard pressed to beat them. IMHO I'd say the gr60's can stand up to just about anything
Thanks for that,

I have read that review, it doesn't get much better than that.

On a slightly more of a newbie thread, I was thinking of the RS8s as I loved the slightly heavier bass they introduced and atm I'd rather speand my money on two decent fronts rather than the RS6s and possibly a sub woofer or is that a little naive RS8 instead of RS6 + Sub woofer? (price different would be around $US500 on the sub woofer side)

What do you drive you GRs on? I heard that Arcam and Denon are a nice match. I would probably look at the Denon 2106 to 3806 althouhg read some disparaging reviews on the 3806 esp their HDMI interface.

I currently use a denon 5803 to drive my gr's. It's a 'decent' preamp, though nowhere near what I desire to use. I've been holding off until there is a new preamp with the new dd+ and hdmi 1.3 support available. I'm 100% certain that next time I'm going with separates, though the denon has done a superb job for me.

Not to damper your idea, but I read a review of the RS8’s about six months back (can’t remember the magazine…The Absolute Sound maybe), and the preferred they RS6’s over the 8’s. They said the bass was too muddy and overpowering (Something along those lines). They also said the RS6 did everything the RS8 could but without the flaws of the RS8. If I were you, I would get the RS6’s and a good subwoofer. You should always cross over to a good subwoofer anyway, especially when watching movies. This is just my $0.02, but I hope it helps.
