digg.com description:

"Beginning in July, cable operators can no longer offer set-top boxes that contain integrated navigation and security functions. Instead, cable companies must use either CableCARD or DCAS and they're not happy about it." Comcast may not be happy but I'm sure consumers and companies like TiVo will be ecstatic."

Way overdue, IMO. I can't wait for real competition to the monopoly STB's, with or without DVR's. And this gives anyone a fair shot to sell them to consumers without all the BS. Well, except for CableLabs cert of course, that will be the next sticking point.

Cablecards support looks to be dying out in HDTV's, btw. More and more sets are dropping the slots, maybe due to lack of consumer interest or continuing compatibility issues.

Or that cable companies have done their best to suppress their usage. Cox in Gainesville would not let me install it myself (read: charging 25-50 bucks for a service call), and only charged 2 dollars less to use it than a set top box. pffft
