The mains adapter on my mp3 player says output 5V. I also have a network hub which runs off 5V.

I remember when I was younger, and used to mess around with IC's they were TTL chips which ran at 5V. And they meant 5V! One second at 5.5V and you were buying all new chips. Then along came CMOS, which worked from 3-15V and used about a zillionth of the current, and suddenly everything could run off a 9V battery.

So my question is this. Are there any circuits these days which really need a 5.0V power supply, or is it just a number they picked? Neither of my 5V mains plugs looks like it has room for a serious voltage regulator.

Thanks for your opinions

:)
