OT: Minimum requirements for DVD burning

276 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  milky way
I am planning on setting up a friend with a PC and one of the things that he would like to do is burn DVDs (from DVarchived files; see how I made this on topic). He will have to get his own DVD burner but I would be getting him a used PC. What are the minimum requirements for most DVD burners? I have several PCs available (P2-333MHz, P3-500MHz, P3-800MHz, and a Celeron-1.0 GHz). I have enough RAM laying around that I could get any of them up to 512 MB. Would any of these work or will I have to track down a faster box?

I do just fine with an 860MHz and 512 MB RAM.
I can burn DVD's on my P2 350, but I don't even try to do anything else!! My burning speeds are also limited to 2x MAX.

Really? I always assumed that it would take at least 1.0 GHZ. How much RAM do you have?

Thanks... I learned something new today.
You're doing it backwards. Find out which burners he's contemplating and take a look at the spec sheet. This is from Sony's DRU540A:

• Sytstem Requirements:

Pentium III 800 MHz or faster (or equivalent) CPU minimum. Pentium IV 1.6 GHz or faster (or equivalent) CPU is recommended for real time video authoring/editing, 128 MB of RAM (256 MB or more for Windows Windows XP Systems), and 1 GB of free hard disc drive space.

It should tell you exactly what you need.

512 MB....I'm using a first generation burner (A03). It does work, but I would not really recommend it. Most of my DVD burning is done on my main rig which is a P4 2Ghz with an NEC 3500a.
I have been using Celeron 600, 256mb ram for a while, no problem at all. Watch out for those HUGE dvd burning program, it matters: Easy CD creator 7, Sonic DVDit often freeze; Nero, DVD mate, Easy CD creator 6 are just fine.
