OT: Netflix (pricing)

1552 Views 35 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  yanksno1
I've visited their home page 3 times in the last 10 minutes and had the opportunity to sign up at 3 different prices...$15.99, $17.99 and $19.99. Every time I cleared my cookies/cache and reloaded, the price was different.

They're probably testing the market to see what price point is best...

I signed up for $15.99. Not a bad deal and doesn't seem to be any catch.

Just did it again and got $21.99...interesting...
It's always $17.99 for me... how did you ensure it didn't recognize you by our IP address?
Dunno...clearing cache/cookies worked for me...and it let me sign up for $15.99.....

I have noticed however, that the bias tends to be in the 17.99 and 19.99 range. I got the 15.99 one only about 2 times out of ten...
Have you seen their stock prices? It was $17+ closing on Thursday and opened at about $10 Friday morning. It is still at $10.30.

I heard they made some kind of announcement, but I don't know what it was.

They were at a high of $38 or so earlier this year.

I haven't tracked their stock, but it might have something to do with Blockbuster's entry into this type of market. However, the precipitous drop you linked to is interesting...

If they're in tough shape, I can see why they're tweaking their pricing structure. $21.99 is over-market, IMO.

(on the edit...wasn't there some class action suit going on against them relating to Securities Act claims? I wonder if something important happened in that case on Friday...)

Just caught up on the news. Brutal on their stock price, but sweet, $17.99 for all customers. That rocks! Can't wait for that to start!

From what I have read, Blockbuster seems to be the one is a tough spot. They got something like 900million - 1billion in debt. Ouch!

Yeah, hopefully they reduce the current subscriber price soon especially since Blockbuster's is going into effect in 2 weeks.

Debt in these business is the norm..just look at amazon's cash flow over the last 5 years...people still see value in them.

I bet Netflix is putting the $15.99 bait out there to get suckers (like me :) to sign up on a whim so they can get their subscriber numbers up. As we all know (*cough*Tivo*cough*), the market loves a "leader."

I'm currently using Blockbuster online, for a 6 month special of $15.99 + tax for 3 out. To get this, sign up for the trial then select cancel, it'll offer you this.

Shipping is pretty good, got much better lately, I manage 12 to 14 films a month.
I used to be on Netflix's 8 movie plan for $24.99 a month. Then they moved it up to $29.99 a month. When they tried to bump it up to $49.99, I quit.

At what step do you see this cancel button? NamePassword/Shipping/Payment/Conformation or Other?

and you mean $15.99 per a month on a contract or are you saying $15.99 for the whole 6 months?!
I've never seen any price other than 21.99/mon before or after clearing cookies and cache, anybody else see different pricing at Netflix?

$15.99 per month, for upto 6 months, then it goes back to regular price, no contract, just the offer lasts 6 months. This was when the regular price was $19.99

Goto your account and select cancel, they try and stop you by offering you a discount, Netflix does this too.

How many times have you tried? I just did it three times and got a 21.99, a 17.99 and a 19.99. Lately I've found the 15.99's are about 1 in 20 now.
For $24.99 a month you can get unlimited rentals at BlockBuster stores. If I was going to do anything, that would be the way to go as you could get a new movie every night if you wanted.

I was with Netflix back in the 4 movies out at a time for $20.00 thing were they trans-shipped the dvds. (You told them you returned it and the shipped the new one the same day.) That was cool. When they stopped doing that, the turn around for me was about 8-9 days! I dropped them at that point because I was hardly able to get more than 6 a month, down from about 10-12.
I am all for supporting Netflix. They were the ones who started the whole DVD rental by mail. It started because of what happened to many of us - late fees for movies that weren't late or only late by a few hours. I want to see Blockbuster go down.
BTW, Amazon is supposed to get into the DVD rental by mail business also.
It's been a loooooong time since I've posted here but I was perusing the board and stumbled across the thread and thought I might be of some assistance. I didn't come up with the following solution but it's effective and worth sharing. I hope it works for those of you who want to sign up for Netflix at $15.99.

So you're new to Netflix and you want to get the $15.99 deal? No problem.

Using IE, follow these instructions. It might be easier if you clear your cookies and cache before doing this. Have fun. Hope it works for you guys. Enjoy Netflix!

1. Make sure you've hit the main default page of netflix

2. Now, close all instances of IE

3. Go into your cookies folder and find the file which says [email protected][#].txt (where somename is something like your login account name). Your cookies folder is usually in C:\\Documents and Settings\\somename\\Cookies.

4. Open that [email protected][#}.txt file with notepad or any text editor.

5. Find the line which says "custProps".

6. Right below the line, update to "219~1~6~". The 1 is the $15.99 deal. 2-6 are the other "bad" deals.

7. Lastly, save the file and exit Notepad. Launch IE and go to the nextflix main page again.

Justin - Appreciate the post, and even though I'm an existing member I was curious to see if I could get a deal on the 'change terms' screen. I know your instructions are for non-members, but do you (or anyone else) have any insight on why the 'custProps' entry is missing for me (and maybe other members?). Think it's just because I've already signed up?
