From Friday's CableFax Daily(TM)...

'To stay competitive with Rupert Murdoch's DirecTV and TiVo's home networking service, MSOs need to keep spending with Scientific-Atlanta (S-A) on higher-end set-tops for advanced services. That was the self-serving message Jim McDonald delivered during his company's 3Q earnings call, when he reported a 39% drop in earnings. Murdoch and TiVo "underscore the importance of an aggressive video strategy to our customers," he said, noting that DirecTV already has 300-400K DVR customers and is expected to have 1mln+ by year-end.

McDonald wouldn’t endorse or contradict Motorola's prediction this week that broadband equipment revenue would likely decline 10-15% because of MSOs’ reduced capex, saying that a significant amount of S-A's sales are coming from new products. Of the 929K set-tops S-A sold in the Q, more than half had DVR, HD or integrated cable modem capabilities. "We believe that through the announced reductions in spending, they can find the capital they need to buy the advance set-tops to compete effectively," he said.'
