A friend of mine is interested in getting an HDTV but at this time does not want to purchase programming past Comcast basic.

What are the options of receiving the networks in HDTV either through the Comcast HD box or over via an antenna? Will a stb need to be purchased for the OTA tuner?

All three networks here in Nashville are broadcasting HDTV OTA.

I'm sure someone in here will correct me if I'm wrong, but "your friend" can run the OTA antenna cable straight into your HDTV and receive HD programming...if he has PIP, that should also work...no STB or monthly fees required. Both digital and HD broadcasts OTA are excellent.

You have to have an HDTV decoder to get HDTV with "HDTV compatible" TVs. Very few TVs have the digital decoder built in, I would guess maybe 5% have a decoder built in. The rest are just "compatible" or "ready." These decoders will cost around $300 for a cheap one. With Comcast the digital decoder is built into the cable box and it outputs via component cables.
