I am considering taking the HDTV plunge, from what i understand the only HDTV signals you can recieve are from either local OTA stations or the two on Direct TV. I live in Buford-Cumming area and I am concerned that I cannot get the ATL OTA stations, I have tried the atenna.org site and it said I could only get PBS and ch46. Does anybody have any experiance in the North Atl area, or know where to go to find out about signal strenght?, Thanx Terry Brady

Try this:

You will have to use the DT filter to filter out all the non-digital TV stations. This site will also give you the antenna locations for pointing info. You should be able to get all the networks with the right antenna/rotor/preamp setup. Please let us know how it turns out.

BTW, Dish (E*) has HBO-HD, SHO-HD, PPV-HD, Demo channel-HD, and for some, CBS-HD.

There is a group on Yahoo dedicated to Atlanta area Digital TV reception. You'll find a lot of help there. It is called AHDTV. Go to Yahoo or send an email to [email protected] to see how to join.

Shorton: I ask your indulgence, I looked at ardman.net, do you know what they mean by Grade A signal vs. CITY Grade? also if I am within the red bulls-eye line will I be pretty safe in getting a signal if I put a high quality antenna in my attic? sorry I am a dumb salesman, technically challenged.

Thanx for your help, I will checkout both sites.

I live in Cumming also but on the West side of 400 and on the back side of Sawnee Mtn. The mountain is completely blocking my path to the transmitting towers. However, I installed a 120" Radio Shack antenna in my attic with a Channel Master pre-amp and receive 3 of 4 Digital Channels. NBC is almost always 100%, Fox is around 80%, ABC is a little unstable at 60-80% and unfortunately CBS is a big fat 0%. I am still working on CBS with a 2nd antennna/pre-amp combination and will not give up anytime soon. I don't know what a "DT filter" is and why you would need it. Obviously you will pick up both analog and digital channels with your antenna but you can usually tell your STB not to recognize the analog ones. If you have specific questions, drop me an e-mail. Good Luck

Terry,

Here's the direct link to the Atlanta HDTV Yahoo! group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ahdtv

Assuming you don't have bmello's problem of being blocked by a mountain, I expect you are in pretty good shape. It looks like the antennas are on a pretty straight path from you. I suggest an antenna in the attic similar to what bmello has. If it weren't for WXIA (channel 10), you could just get a Yagi. But, the Yagi's only pull in UHF (channels 15+). I use an 80" Yagi in my attic in Sandy Springs and it works perfectly. To get channel 10, I just us another antenna with a combiner that isolates the VHF and UHF feeds while combining them.

Do not waste time or money with "omni directional" antennas. If you're in the same situation as most around Atlanta, you'll have hills and trees that tend to bounce the signals around to create "multipath" problems. A directional antenna (e.g., a Yagi) will clean that up. Again, I don't think the problem is signal strength to reach north to you that far. The key is having a clean line of sight (no mountain) and a decent antenna to clean up the multipath.

You mentioned PBS. We don't actually get PBS here, yet. Here's the current lineup:

WXIA-DT: 10

WGCL-DT: 19

WAGA-DT: 27

WSB-DT: 39
