Open to lots of Opinions. Argueably though, something like the Sony Qualia, JVC HD2k, or one of the nicer 3 chip DLP units are going to be about the best right now. All are in the $30kish range.

Im going to counter with:

Whats your throw?

Whats the ambient lighting condition of your room the projector needs to work within?

What features do you desire?

I dont think you can choose any one projector based on price alone knowing all technologies regardless of price have weaknesses.

Choosing something that meets your needs with good service after the sale and warranty may prove to the best purchase even if it is cheaper than a Qualia:)

Not really. In most digital movie theaters they use commercial venue projectors. These type projectors range in the $100000k or more range. They would be overkill for an HT use situation and as Alan pointed out, might actually adversely affect the image.

They are really meant for doing large images, and they are not all necessarily better than some of the much less expensive home units.

Gee, I thought I had handled this question pretty well. It's a little bit like asking what is the best wine. Circumstance and taste both are in play. Some people seem to value black level above a lot of other attributes. Some people are crazy for lumens. Most everyone would like a true 1080p machine, but there are some people who seem to think that the added resolution will not mean so much as would better contrast, etc.

I don't mean to offend, but it is a little like asking what is the best car, the best wine, the best cupcake, whatever. It all depends......

True, a lot comes down to personal preference. Each person has their own values as to what they look for in a product. There really is no right way to answer this as it changes for each person.

Tryg’s suggested projector:

The Sony SRX-R110 - 10,000 ANSI lumens from a 4 KILOWATT xenon lamp!

Anyone care to guess what THAT bulb costs to replace?

Not to mention the 2 ton refrigeration unit needed to cool the monster.

Ah if I only had more money than brains the fun I could have!

Actually, if they follow the design method for the digital cinema DLP projectors, the replacement cost is about $1000-1500. The digital cinema DLPs are designed so that you can replace just the lamp and not the entire lamp assembly.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I just got my first projector setup. It's just a X1, but I just wanted to get my foot in the door and not spend a fortune just to find out this was not for me. But now that I'm setup I have to say this is definitely the way to go for movies.

I put this post on here just to see what the hottest most state of the art projectors use technology wise. Plus I got a buddy who has a brother in law that says he just bought a $12,000 dollar projector and I just wanted to see what some of the more expensive ones were costing nowadays. The brother in law is a compulsive stroke. I was just curious to see if he got a near top o the line one or not. I don't know what he has yet but I'll be sure to find out.

THanks for the info though.

As far as the movie theatre projectors go. They just built a new theatre in a town near me and the whole thing is digital. It's a kerasote theater and I have to say the image quality is horrendous. Under any action scenes the screen blurs real bad. Any panning or quick movements and you can't make out what is going on. When it comes to movies I won't go there unless the movie is selected by my wife since she likes the ones with no action and are nothing special to look at.

I find it interesting that the Sony 4k requires a 4kW lamp to get 10,000 lumens (no confirmation that they can hit this number yet). DLP can do 10,000 lumens with a 2kW lamp. 4kW lamps will be very short lived and will exhibit flicker sooner...not to mention the cost. I think it is an Ushio short arc lampwhich should run at least $2,500 just for the bare lamp.
