So, those of us here in the frozen tundra will one day feel some warmer sun and spring days. My thoughts have recently turned to our outdoor summer movie nights!

Any ideas for this year - improvements to your system, accessories, hints for what movies to show, etc.?

I have not given much thought to what movies we will show - but would like to do Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and perhaps Monsters v. Aliens. Any other thoughts? Our crowd is typically younger than 10 with parents.

We're ready to go! Just need to wait about 100 more days...

We usually do 4 events for the neighborhood: June, July, August, and September. If we can, we want to see if we can squeeze a May show in this year.

Our schedule for this year is Cars, Monsters/Aliens, Cloudy Meatballs, and we're going to end with Narnia (Lion Witch and Wardrobe). Since I switched to the scope screen last year, I only want to show scope movies now.

No plans for any other changes this year. Added the subs outside two years ago, new massive scope screen last year. If anything, I might bury some wires this year, but that's about it.

Nothing new really. Screen frame broke taking it down so need to do some minor repairs and replace the worn out fabric screen. Also instead of Friday Saturday Sunday It will be Saturday Sunday Monday since I now work on Fridays. As for movies most of the time I don't know what I'm going to show until the day of the show since most come from red box and now the blockbuster kiosks.

New! Yes everything
I am just getting into this for the first time this year. I have my old Denon 3803 and going to throw together some DIY LCRS, not sure if I am going to go with surrounds yet. Also I have a roll of 12'x96" of Phifer SW I am going to try to use for a screen. PJ not addressed yet. In any case sure looking forward to this. Now if the freaking Iowa weather would get with the program.

Very anxious to go/get started myself. As a big milwaukee brewer fan, I wish I could get some later FRI SAT games but really nothing until later in the summer. All 6/7 pm starts. Odd how there's little to no west coast weekend series going on till later. Guess I'll have to "settle" with some movies for awhile.

Anyways, being new to PJ's, I'm completely expecting it to be much too bright at 7/8 PM in may/june for outside use for the earlier summer games.

I already have a pair of excellent outdoor speakers mounted to the left and right of where the screen will be.

Just a matter of running a LONG hdmi and extension cord.

Oh, AND geting a PJ!

Hoping to find a steal of a deal on c-list at some point.

Quick question:

I was hoping to just fabriate my own portable screen that I could hang on my trellis when I need it. Any suggestions? I was thinking of framing one up using 2X4's and using an appropriate piece of "canvas", stapling it to the frame, and painting it if necessary. Figure a couple of hooks and eye-loops will be fine to hang it.

will that work?

thanks all,

James

Welcome to the club! At the height of Summer, around the solstice, we usually find that movies don't start until about 9:15 or 9:30.

With respect to your question on the screen, I think that is a fine plan, and I think you will find that the canvas works great. I used artist's canvas for my first screen several years ago and I thought it worked great - but it was too difficult to get up and down easily because it was so heavy and I was not using a frame, but it was strung up between two steel poles.

well i have modified the screen as you can see in the Shirley street theater rebuild thread.

the cross pipes you see that make it look like a window are there to make it so one person can install or remove it. before you needed 1 person on each side of the screen to lift it in place which involved a ladder. now 1 person on a ladder can lift it from the middle and install it.

New house/yard - New screen?

Just moved in November. Snow now gone and starting to look at the layout of the yard. Need to accomodate the BYT, patio area, kids' playset and some trees. Plan to use current setups (BOC and Trapeze) but may opt for new Trapeze material in the light gray color.

Anyone going to show 3:10 to Yuma this year? Saw it last week on BluRay and was great.

This will be my first year into BYT.

I have set up two screens, both Carl's BOC. The first is his complete set up 16x9 screen, for the bigger movie nights. Then I also bought his unfinished 5x9 screen, made a frame out of 1x2's and stapled it tight, then made another frame around that and painted it black. It was an inexpensive 5x9 screen that I can easily attach to our latice on the edge of our patio via eye hooks for those impromptu movie nights or just to catch a ball game outside.

This is my outdoor screen setup. It really is pretty cool for the kids as well as the parents. Hope to break it out soon. Any of you guys living in the Chicagoland area and would like to hang out just let me know. We do use this pretty much every weekend we're home.

Sorry about the last photo quality, it was taken with my iphone.

Where are you at in Chicagoland?

There's a whole group of us around here that get together occasionally.. Usually for indoor theater meets but a handful dabble in backyard theater as well.

You may want to check out Backyard Theater . com. I think there is a fair number of people on there from the Chicago area. Also, lots of great ideas.

Cool, your close. So far I love the Pj. I have used it outside only once of my smaller 5x9 screen, and it looked awesome. Due to our weather we have not been outside much yet. I have have done about 5 or 6 movies inside with it and honestly I could not be happier. I hope to do a showing Friday on the 16x9 screen. So in my opinion its definitley worth the price.

For the folks who just added to the thread, welcome!

I do some outdoor events every year. Last year was the first I had some fellow AVSers come, it was lots of fun.

We're thinking of moving this year, so might only get 1 or 2 shows in before then. June for sure, but thinking of May - just to get one more night. Late night May still tends to be a bit chilly for some, we'll see how this yhear shapes up.

Viator, you're only a few minutes away, and Ceme, not too much further.

Check out this thread for the Chicagoland group:

This thursday will be our first here in KC! It's set to be 78 degrees, 68 through the night, minimal wind, and we're looking to break out the new 22' screen from China.

Right now, we're planning on "Monsters, Inc." Though that may change. Who knows, I'll let the kids pick.

On the 22nd, we're of course doing "Avatar". That should be a blast
