Check out my signature for a link to my pictures of my outdoor screen.
There used to be a very long thread in the General Home Theater forum that was solely devoted to outdoor screens. If you can track it down, it gives a lot of great info on materials used, etc.
My screen is 16 feet wide and about 7.5 feet tall for Cinemascope format. It generally uses 8 foot long 2x2s that are all hinged together--so it can fold up and be stored away when not in use. I use large white cotton fabric (I think it was about 108 inches wide--from Joann's), but since it is relatively thin, I back it with white painters tarp (8x15 papery on one side, plastic on the other).
The screen itself hangs from my deck, so I let gravity "unfold" it, and variously placed bungee cords keep it down on my deck rails.
The whole set up works surprisingly well. I am quite pleased with it--and so are all of my neighbors. Click below to see (skip the pictures that are obviously my indoor screen...).
