I have two kids, one 6 and the other 9, and we have themed movie night/partys for them all the time. Usually as a reward for doing good in school or for birthdays. We had a movie night recently for the younger one and watched "Over the Hedge". They had dinner first (upstairs) with plates and such all fitting the theme. I made up movie tickets for the show and of coarse popcorn. Also made up coloring pages of the characters from the movie for them to work on after the show (while I cleaned up the mess). Attached are some pictures of the night. Funny how the theatre capacity doubles with little kids. ;-) They really enjoy these partys, and it is actually fun for wife and I to plan and set them up.

I've done the same for my kids....you can see on my website the various parties we've had. They sure have fun, but dang, what a mess afterwards.

Yes, I had to laugh. We have lots of kid party pictures with many more than we thought would fit. Your kids are always going to remember this. Its something all of my kids have done (3, 8, 12) and everyone has a great time. My 12 year old had a bunch of kids over on Halloween to watch "The Others" and it went over big as well.


Its amazing how many old movies kids haven't had the opportunity to see. Some are so good that it just doesn't do them justice watching it on anything less than the big screen.

They are a lot of fun, but lately the interest in the neighborhood seems to be waning. May be time to hang it up. We did three or four movies two years ago, and only got in two movies last year. I'll try again this spring, but if we get the 20-30 attendance again we'll probably stop. It takes about 40-50 to make it worth while financially. Plus, when it takes a whole day to prepare and get the yard in order, you want it to be worth your while effort-wise.


I encourage people to do this because it can be fun, but my neighbors have so much going on in thier lives it's hard to find the perfect date for everyone and, more importantly, the perfect movie.

The mess is easily cleaned and forgotten but the happy memories will last a lifetime. This is especially important when the kids are older and have moved away to live their lives.

Our two children moved out nearly a year ago and the memories of similar parties, we had the house the kids wanted to come to to "hang out", fill our hearts and soul when it is quiet and we are lonely thinking about them.

I am not sad they have left. Actually quite proud of them but it does leave a hole that you are not used to.

Thank God we are a happy couple hehehe.

I am a parent of 3 very small children--5, 3 and 18 months. The thought of them moving out years down the road has filled me with dread.
