Pairing Booze with Movies

2566 Views 82 Replies 48 Participants Last post by  eweiss
Since it has been determined that I have a drinking problem, I thought I'd throw out this challenge: come up with a good paring of movies and booze.

In other words, what movie comes to mind when you think of

Fine Champagne?

Bud?

Tequila shots?

Rum and Diet Coke?

So pick a drink and pick a movie. What makes for the perfect pair?

Tequila Shots - Fear and Lothing in Las Vegas
Bud - Animal House

Tequila Shots - Desperado

Fine Champagne - Gossford Park

Rum and Coke - Swingers??? (does anyone actually drink those?)
A pet peeve.

Have you ever noticed something which happens often in movies and TV.

A host offers someone a drink. The person accepts. The host then pours the drink and serves it. A conversation ensues. Never does the person touch the drink and the conversation continues. Finally the conversation ends, the person leaves the room, and the full drink is left sitting there to go to waste.

Rudest thing I've ever seen. I've never in my life had someone put a drink in my hand that I didn't finish.

I’ll add:

Marijuana? Anything

Cocaine? Scarface

As a rank novice in this, when it comes to fine champagne, what do you more-refined types suggest?

Moet and Chandon

Mumm's Cordon Rouge, and Extra Dry

Veuve Cliquot

etc.

These range from $35 - $45 here.

My only familiarity with decent champagne was Korbel Brut (California), based on winebook recommendations. But on a trip to Paris, we toured Mumm's and had our first glass of real French Champagne - Viva la Difference!

As we almost never drink, I figure if we decide to have a glass/bottle of wine, we might as well splurge a bit. Korbel is $17 and the French ones above are 2-2.5 times as much. Krug probably goes for $70 - $90 and up, but I don't want to spend that much, unless it's really, really worth it.

So, what do you recommend in a fine Brut Champagne from the above, or others? Or are there California Champagnes that are just as good, but for half the price?

What partly piqued my interest was an HD show on Champagne I watched last week. Man, between WW II and the blight, we almost lost French Champagne in the last century.

Cold Duck. 5 bucks a bottle.

The only thing about this. I learned as long ago as my college days that, for me, it's no good to imbibe and then try to watch a movie. Even mild intoxication makes it almost impossible for me to concentrate. And that's just the simpleton stuff. Something like Matrix and I don't remember one scene.

So I watch the movie first and get drunk later. Or drink while watching the movie and then have to watch it all over again.
They all remind me of various Bogart movies. That man could convincingly play any character, as long as that character was a drinker. :)
Beer means crank up the volume...Obviously to compensate for the alcohol's effect of depressing hearing.....Turn it up!!
Any Nice Chianti -> Silence of the Lambs

Cognac -> James Bond flicks

Coors Light -> Gigli (Canned piss for piss on a disc)
Cheap Scotch, $5 vodka, grain alcohol, beer, you name it: "Barfly"
Eweiss, for the very special moments, my I suggest Cristal champagne. About the same price as Dom. Had a bottle for the 2000 new year.

Thanks! I'll check into it.
Bud .... Deliverance

Tequila shots .... Dusk 'til Dawn. (Yes, terrible movie but when Salma Hayek pours tequila down her gorgeous leg into Tarentino's mouth .... well, you'll want *some*, too).

Champagne .... Porn. Okay, okay, I don't watch Champagne movies.

Rum & Diet Coke .... Withnail and I. But I'm not sure why.
Hmmmm... Just checked some prices for Cristal Champagne.

That may have to wait until we celebrate the publication of my bestseller!

Sal,

I'd suggest the following "solutions" to your drinking "problem":

The Maltese Falcon: scotch and soda

The Long Kiss Goodnight: Campari and soda

Once Upon a Time in the West, or True Grit: bourbon (and bbq pork :D)

Desperado: tequila or Metaxa sidecars

La Femme Nikita: vodka martinis, or Pernod on the rocks

The Score: gin martinis

The Fifth Element: dark rum

Rear Window: light rum

9 1/2 Weeks: red wine, probably a bordeaux

And, finally:

Dr Strangelove: purified water :D

Let me add an old movie related drinking adage from my friend:

Instead of watching "The Matrix: Reloaded" in the theaters, take the $20 you would've spent, rent the original, drink a bunch of beer, and "Re-watch the Matrix, loaded."
