Hey all-

So this is my first foray into the world of HTPC, but I'm wondering what the possibility is of me being able to play other Region DVD's (especially PAL DVD's) through a HTPC. My current setup includes a hacked off-brand dvd player just to complete this task...

Is there any one Video output card that can handle this conversion? I assume the DVD-ROM drive must first be Region-Free, then at least it can be read....

Thanks for the help, I checked FAQ upon FAQ to no avail...

Regards,

Erik

Any software or hardware (H+) PC DVD player can handle various region discs.

The only issue is the RPC-2 protection, but you can easily get rid of that with :

- flashing your DVD drive with a RPC-1 (region free) firmware. You can check if there's one for your drive at http://www.firmware.fr.st/

- a software to force or change the player region. One of the best solutions is to use Region Killer (freeware) which tricks the player regarding the actual DVD region. You can download it at http://elby.ch/english/fun/software/index.html

Of course all of this has been extensively discussed previously, you should try the search function of the forum and not only browse through the FAQ.

When you say "conversion," do you mean you want to play back the DVD's on a standard NTSC television set? Or that you want to set up a HTPC that outputs a high-quality VGA/DVI signal (which is the primary reason most people use a HTPC)?

Either way, it's quite easy to get multi-region, PAL and NTSC playback from a HTPC. Let us know which method you have in mind, and we can give you some product suggestions.
