I have a Toshiba 34HF83 HDTV that I want to take with me overseas. I would run it on a power conditioner and use a step down transformer for 220 to 110. The power would still be at a frequency of 50Hz.

I need some advice putting together some components to make this work. I can't afford above basic consumer grade equipment but of course want the best possible picture. (Under 1000, maybe even 500?)

I will have a PAL source signal from satellite or cable.

Will the tv operate properly at 50 hz?

If I could find a transcoder to output svideo or upconvert to 480p or higher, will their be a syncing issue because of the 50 Hz issue.

I would be willing to build a HTPC if that would be the best way to go for my price range.

Any suggestions as to equipment as well as the quality I might expect would be greatly appreciated.

first, make sure that the TV can work with PAL. If it can, most likely you won't get such a great PQ. The US market usually gets NTSC-only displays.

If you're still set on going through with this, the power converter from 220V to 110V will very likely work. I rarely see devices that fail to operate because of 110V/50Hz combination.

PAL->NTSC converters usually work quite badly. There are some units like those around, but all of them, except the broadcast quality ones, degrade the signal quite badly. There are some VCRs that can do this, but it will produce mediocre quality images.
