Panasonic AE700 Vs AX200

3533 Views 22 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  hitchfan
I recently sold my house and along with it went the projector (AE700 on a 106" screen - completly light controlled room). Now that I am into the new place I have been shopping for a new machine. Is there anyone that can give me an idea of what the PQ of the ax200 will be like in comparison to my old AE700? I rather not pay for a AE1000 or AE2000 if I can get something on par with the projector I had cheaper (I was very happy with the old machine). I use the projector 70% for DVD movies, 15% for Blue ray, and 15% for gaming with a PS3.

I too am curious to see what kind of improvement I would see between my 2.5 year old AE700 and the new AX200. Personally, I'm leaning towards holding off for 1080p (hoping the AE2000 hits 2k pretty soon) but would consider the AX200 if it's a killer unit.
The AX200 has a great picture and is extremely bright. It would be a nice upgrade coming from an AE700.
I had the ae900 'and the ax100 I have now has better color 'sharper'Brighter' better blacks. So yes their is no comparison IMHO.The ax200 would smoke your old ae700.I am finally waking up to that brighter is better,It is the top requirement for me,Who wants to look at a dim pic.Not me.Screw black levels resolution color if the pic is dim.I want Light then color 'resolution' then decent blacks.I will never but a dim fp.Thank god for the panny ax100.BOB

Ditto, I very much agreee with all your statements.

I had an AE700 and AE900 and a Z4 as I recall, the AX100 I owned blew them all away.

I would take brighter over 1080p any day of the week.

The AX100 and AX200 are flame throwers at 2000 lumens.

Brighter is a bigger jump in picture quality than 720p vs 1080p, no way will I buy a 1080p projector untill one comes out thats at least 2000 lumens.

For what its worth, a review on Projector Central or Projector Reviews (I forget which one) said, running HD DVD / Blue Ray on a AX100 looks so good its hard to tell that its not a 1080p projector.

I would agree, I had a HD DVD player hooked up to my AX100 and the picture was stunning to say the least.

Brighter is better than 1080p.

Bold statement.

Also, look at projector central's ax200u preview snippet:
We've had the pleasure of working with the AX200U and it looks to be another winner from Panasonic. Of particular note is its outstanding display of HD movies from HD DVD and Blu-ray. Believe it or not, even though the display is native 720p resolution, the HD image quality looks for all the world like it is coming from a 1080p projector to just about anyone but a professional critic. So if you are looking for a projector that delivers virtual 1080p quality at a fraction of the price, the AX200 is a projector you won't want to miss.

Brighter "IS" better!...I also had the 700U as well as the 900U. After owning the newer AX100U for a few months, I watched the 900U in my bedroom setup to see the difference and man!...I was so bummed at the dim picture, I sold it and bought another AX100U for my bedroom. The AX100/200U projector has major POP!...I will "not" buy a 1080P until they come out with at least 2000 Lumens...

Brighter is of course better, but you miss the whole 720p vs 1080p argument, lol. Both the 700 and 900 are the same resolution right?

Apples to oranges.....
Davyo and HD man.your my type of guys.We need a new forum.Bright FP.You go to the over $3k forum and it is all black levels,They trash the panny ax100.The dlp crowd trashes the ax100.I even had a JVC rs1 owner who paid $5k pm to buy my ax100,He said his rs1 just could not put out enough light for his 2.35 screen. Is the ax100 perfect.Heck no.I would like better blacks,Sharpness has never been a complaint but a littel more would be nice,Colors have allways been great.I wish panny would use the new d7 panles with better blacks in the ax300,THEN I WILL UPGRADE.Or the new ae2000 for $2k and 2000 lumes.Heck I might just buy a new ax200.I hear the price is going to be very good.BOB

You can buy the PTAX200U for 1299 right now at several sites!...(Heck of a deal)
I'm hoping that the great price follows the AE2000 and Panny shakes things up with a $1999 price. I'd sacrifice 500 lumens for the 1080p. 1500 would still be a huge improvement (50% I believe) over my AE700.

Why would you sacrifice the 500 lumens just to have 1080p when the difference between 720p and 1080p is going to be so slight you might not even be able to tell the difference.

A 500 lumen difference is going to be very very noticeable.

Well, I'd prefer to buy a 1080p model that also happens to be a light cannon...but I'm not sure that's in the budget. My AE700 is less than 1000 lumens and I always found it reasonably bright, so I would have to imagine that a 1500 lumen 1080p projector would give me the best of both worlds.
Any 1080p projector ( especially DLP ) is way out of budget compared to the wide array of lower priced 720p models. The AX200 for 1200$ is a fantastic projector.

I measured 3 different AE 2000 projectors and the light output was no where even close to specs. It is a disappointing model in the light output category. Now the AX200 I have as one of my three projectors is a 'HUGE' step up in brightness.

If it were me and I was sitting at least 12-13 feet from a 100-110' screen I would go for the AX200 and save a lot of dough.
I had an ax200 at the same time as my sim2 ht380.

I would say the AX200 was 80% of my HT380 at a super fraction of the cost. I recommend it as a starting projector to any who are looking to buy a TV set instead...

I agree, I like a bright image, but you do not have to buy a light cannon to get a bright image. A front projector set up consists of a projector and a screen. Saying you will never buy a dim projector is ridiculous unless you have an existing screen that you are trying to work with. My projector would be considered dim, max output 700 ANSI lumens. With my DaLite HP screen (2.8 gain) I can match the FL of the AX200U, have better contrast and a better image.

Couple things. 1st, you lose the wide viewing angle with a high power screen. 2nd, those screens cost more $. I made good DIY screen that looks great and took the extra $500-$1000 and put it into buying a better projector.

Currently our house is in transition (redoing the HT room), and I bought an AX200 to temporarily replace my 1080p projector (I had an AE10000, and will get a new model in the fall). I am actually surprised at how good the 720p picture is. Its better when some lights are on becuase of the high lumen output, and pretty close with the lights off. My wife said she sees no difference in resolution.

I have a little over $300 (purchased new) in my 106" HP screen, so I don't know anything about saving $500 to $1,000 to put forth on a better projector. I agree that you do not have as wide a viewing angle, but a lot of people do not need the wide viewing angle. I am just saying you do not have to buy a light cannon to get a bright image with a lot of pop. A screen with gain does the same thing as increasing the lumens and it can allow you to use the projector in economy mode, thus increasing the life of the projector and bulb.

I wholeheartedly agree. I've owned the ax-100 and while it was a step up from my ae700/900 it is not in the same league as my Sharp XV-Z12000 MK II. And with the 106" HP pulldown screen that I bought used on the 'gon for $100 I have the same pop as I had with the Panny and I get great Black levels/contrast and sharp picture. One last thing about the AX-100 and the Panny LCD PJ's in general, while they are very bright and have great colors, I always felt they were lacking when it came to watching movies and with the "soft" picture from their smoothscreen technology. No matter how much I tweaked it, I could never help myself from adjusting the focus ring...With the Sharp, I don't worry about tweaks or upgrades anymore, I just enjoy the PQ...

I have about the same set up. Marantz VP12S4 and 106" high power. Great projector and screen combination. The HP is perfect with the 12S4.
