I just attended the Panasonic press conference at CES 2014, where the company made a surprising claim—that its engineers have achieved plasma image quality using LCD technology. It's a bold claim that I intend to investigate.

When it comes to 2014 flat-panel TVs, Panasonic punts

The new TC-AX800U series features UHD resolution and edge-lit local dimming, as well as HDMI 2.0 and Displayport connections . It is available in 58" and 65" sizes; the 58" is available now and the 65" model will ship spring 2014.

Panasonic's TC-55AS680U is the 1080p flagship, but is only available in a 55" size. 240Hz refresh is the headline feature, and like the rest of the company's 2014 models it will feature an improved smart TV experience dubbed Life+ Screens.

The company released a number of additional 1080p LED-lit LCDs, but what I'm curious about is the claim that Panasonic engineers built an LED-lit LCD that can fill the shoes of the now-cancelled line of Panasonic plasma panels. I'll follow up once I've had time to check those new TVs out.

The press conference ended with a pitch for Panasonic's new line of hair dryers and curling irons. Simply put, Panasonic plasma is history. Will Panasonic remain a presence in the consumer TV market, or is this the beginning of the end for Panasonic as a TV brand?

I have a strong feeling that statement will blow up in Panasonics face! They go from making average led sets to matching plasma quality. I'll believe it when I see it.

Marketing. Vague statement without specifics.

It possibly can match or exceed their plasma quality in well lit rooms.

I view this as being near the end not the beginning of it. Only two 4k sets, 58 & 65" and both edge lit. 65" is carry forward from this year. Sorry to see them go.

So let me get this right what they have essentially said is that now where no longer producing the plasmas our lcd tv's are suddenly magically now as good.
I'll believe it when I see it. But I don't think I or anyone else will see an lcd that is better then there plasmas any time soon.

Their claim is 100% accurate. They claimed their NEW line of LCDs is better than their NEW line of NON EXISTENT plasmas....

I must admit that I am a bit skeptical of the claim but I will wait until I see the TVs before passing judgement. I wonder if Panasonic will have one of its (discontinued) plasma HDTVS on-hand so that CES attendees can make up their own minds? It's unlikely, and here's why: Every expert I talked to said the same thing—the laws of physics make it improbable that a LCD TV could truly match the image quality of a reference plasma panel.

LMAO!

and they're edge-lit to boot! It appears that Panasonic got out of the Plasma game and into stand-up comedy!

When I heard them say that statement I immediately lost all my faith in Panasonic as a quality tv manufacturer. Obviously no edge-lit lcd tv is going to even compare to plasma. Unless of course, they suddenly came up with ground breaking LCD tech that has virtually infinite viewing angles and screen uniformity, along with deep blacks and naturally high motion resolution.

I guess Panasonic has been sandbagging all these years with their bottom tier LCD line so as to not cut into their plasma sales.

Ha, that's funny! You know, it's sad that marketing has been reduced to these levels. Panasonic's LCD TVs have always been mediocre, so why should we even hold out hope that they have magically not only brought them up to par with the best in the industry, but have also actually greatly exceeded the best in the industry? And all in the past year! Ugh -- I'll believe it when reviewers and AVS experts get their hands on them and report back.

Any word on OLED from Panasonic?

Seems like a Hail Mary claim. They are floundering in the TV business. Their plasma line is dead and used to be their flagship. They have always been a low rent player in the LCD space. So throw out a vague, subjective claim that your LCD's are now plasma-like since you have no plasmas to sell, get some free press from it, and when the the sets actually show up and get measured and prove the claim ridiculous, only the nerdy press and boards will notice and their marketing guys will shrug and laugh about it. So why not...

Panasonic is out of the consumer business for TVs and projectors liquidation and no OLED in sight

I am glad I bought a 65ST60 a few months ago..........and a 50ST60 (for $849) one week ago! The picture with D-Nice's settings (after the slides) is mind blowing.

What a shame; my Panny plasma has a gorgeous display. After 3 years I still think it looks fantastic.

Being this is the AVS forum, where "S" is science, what are the objective items that can be measured to truly quantify the "Plasma" subjective experience?

Then, rinse and repeat those same measurements in "Plasma-level" LED.

Finally, the old DBT for fact based result.
