Panasonic: Clay Faces too saturated...but other colors ok! ARRGH!

No matter what adjustment I try in the menu settings, I cant the oversaturated clay faces on my Panasonic P42PC77U. It seems like I can really turn down the color to -12 to eliminate the clay face glow BUT then the rest of the picture lacks balanced color and looks to muted.

If I bring up the color to -8 or so, it will balance the color in the picture but then the faces all seem to have this slightly over saturated reddish/creamy skin tone.

I guess there's really no hope to get a more natural flesh tone like on the Pioneers unless I actually get a Pioneer?

Are the 700U models any better at this?

Clay face was a big problem on the Panasonics for years. They finally issued a firmware fix that "supposedly" took care on the problem. From your accounts, it didn't "take" on your set
Try using standard or cinema settings-- you don't have to turn color down at all. Vivid is too bright for most homes. Vivid is for the store with bright lights or maybe for a house with a very large room and lots of lights.
I find mine has the same problem. I tried some of the setting suggested to get rid of it but it made the rest of the picture look terrible to my eyes. That is the only drawback to this set, its perfectly balanced in every way. I figure every set has its minuses.
why is it also that most people say the Pioneer has the superior picture ( which may be true) but actually is it that makes the Pioneer a superior picture...is it just the darker blacks or is it other things as well??

Pioneer has the most accurate color reproduction and the best processing out of the mainstream displays.

Another false statement by the forum's resident Panny Basher. IIRC the Clay-Face problem was only a problem on the early 2006 models (PX60U) and Panasonic addressed the issue. It was not a problem on the 2005 or older sets, nor is it a problem on the 2007s. And a lot of times it's a problem with the source or settings, or both.
Omelet...forgive me, I was a bit too rash. I just get all jacked up sometimes

I know you care about me and would never do anything to boil my blood...intentionally

I like to kid you a bit. Don't take it so seriously

I have a 77U and was able to dial out clayface and get decently accurate skin tones with Avia II. Keep in mind that nearly everyone on tv and in movies are wearing some kind of makeup....even men.
I've been watching a lot of TV and HDTV...too much quite honestly. From what I can tell with my 42" Panny 75U, it depends on the channel. Some SDTV channels have a bit of clayfacing(not a lot, I've seen far worse)...but most SDTV channels do not and none of my HDTV channels show clayfacing either. I have no had a chance to calibrate my Panny yet, but I've tried settings posted in the official thread and the picture looks quite natural, comparable to other calibrated images I'm used to.

Definitely set the Panny into Cinema mode instead of Vivid or Standard if you want to minimize clay facing.
