Panasonic DMR-EH50 or DMR-E95HE

Hi everyone! :)

I am a newbie to this forum and to the world of dvd recorders. I was hoping if you could help me decide on which dvd recorder to own. My main intention is to a) record tv programmes off my digital satellite recorder and transfer the same to my pc b) transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD. I have browsed through some of the threads on this forum and it has helped me learn some of the terms used in this forum. I also noticed that the Panasonic model is a favourite so I believe that the Panasonic would be ideal for me as well but I have difficulty trying to decide on the model I want. I have narrowed down my search to the following two models and would like your advice on which model is better in terms of PQ as this is a priority for me plus I don’t want to end up with a model that gives a shimmery blurry white line at the bottom of the picture.

-Panasonic DMR-EH50 or

-Panasonic DMR-E95HE

I would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out here and please bear with the terms that I have used.

All I can say is that I purchased the EH50 two months ago and love it.

I have made countless recordings to the HDD and have burned about 16 DVD-Rs.

My use of the EH50 is to record from my Digital Cable to the HDD for time-shift viewing as well as archiving to DVD-R. I also have used it to record some very important VHS material onto the HDD and then dub to DVD-R.

There are many threads on the EH50 here which should give you all the info you need.
Thank you so much captnvideo for your input.

I checked through a lot of the EH50 threads but it doesn't tell me about the shimmery lines at the bottom. I just wanted to confirm that this is not present in both these models as i know some panny models gives this.

Is the PQ better in the E-50 or E95HE?

Sorry to trouble you guys with this but I'd really like to know about this before I take the plunge.

I do not know about shimmery lines at the bottom because I have not seen anything like that. This is the type of thing I might have gotten years ago with VHS but as far as the EH50 is concerned, nothing extraneous appears on the screen. But, again, I am doing practically all my recording to the EH50 HDD from a Digital Cable Box.

I have used the SP recording mode (2 hr) almost exclusively and it is difficult to tell the recording apart from the original source.

Even at LP (4 hr), the PQ is quite good except for some motion artifacts and a bit of blurriness on very fast action sequences.

I cannot comment on the other model you are interested in.

Hopefully, some other AVS members will chip in with their feedback.

Will the e-50 record in 16:9 mode and fill my Samsung DLP 16:9 screen? I realize the picture won't be High Definition quality, but wondered in recording 16:9 material on the E-50 will still fill my screen.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I have Dish Network 811 high definition receiver, so hope that I can program it to send out an IR blast for the Panny E-50.

I think what you are talking about here is a picture artifact that ALL VHS machines put at the bottom of the frame. All DVD recorders will record that artifact because it is part of the picture. So...any DVD that was made from a VHS (and to a lesser degree 8mm) tape, will contain that annoying shimmering line. The saving grace here is that your TV set will hide it because it should be part of the overscan on most TV sets. But when viewed on a computer monitor, you will see it because computer monitors don't have overscan.

Most people view their DVD's on a TV set so don't worry about it, just leave it in there. If you didn't see it when viewing your VHS tape, you won't see it when viewing a DVD that was made from that tape.

According to the EH50 manual, in order to maintain 16:9 aspect ratio High Speed Dubbing must be set to "off".

I would assume that refers to what you are questioning, because I have dubbed several 4:3 letterbox movies in high-speed and the black bars are kept on the top and bottom and I own a regular 4:3 480i 32" TV.
