It has been reported here, in the past, that some Panasonic DVD recorders can have the hard drive replaced by getting a compatible drive and installing it in the machine. When you power it up, the first time after the new drive is installed, the DVD recorder says that the HDD needs to be formatted, and requests you do so before it can proceed with the power up sequence. Once that is done, the machine works like always. If you put in a drive of higher capacity than the original drive, the DVD recorder will format the newer drive to the same size as the original drive, leaving the additional space unusable.

You didn't post your model number, so there is no way of knowing if this will work for you.

Hmmm... I tried to search the forum for replacing a hard disk... couldn't find the right thread. If you have a link, it would be appreciated.

I'm curious about the possibility of replacing a hard drive in a Panny EH-55

Mine's doing fine (knock on wood!), but given the unavailability of new HDD recorders, this would be nice to know. Same question for replacing the DVD burner.

Those are the components likely to go, so it would be nice to know that I can keep the unit running for a long time.

The Panasonic E80H uses the Maxtor 4R080L0, which sells for as little as $37.50. Replacing it is easy once you figure out how to get to it.

I just replaced the hard drive in my Panny E85 (maxtor drive, only cost me 40.00 for the drive) no problems at all, took all of 5 minutes. My drive was actually still working, but I couldn't use the first 6 recording slots without it freezing and going into self check mode. So I had programs in those slots that I never erased and used the drive that way for a few months until I decided to replace it.

Your best bet is to replace with the exact same drive, should be no problem then.
