Panasonic Plasma - ISF Calibration

Today I had my Panasonic TH-50PHD7UY 50" plasma ISF calibrated and the result is just stunning.

I have had the plasma for a bit over a year now. The picture has been excellent. However, was not totally happy with the blacks & gray scale. Also, sometimes there was a bit of a green tint to certain scenes. Don't get me wrong, the picture was great. Nephew once said, "You can see the hair on the beaver's balls". We were watching IMAX beavers movie on INHD TV.

I had previously run DVE to calibrate. Also tried some settings (never in the service menu ) which I read on the Internet. Picture quality was very good.

I run either my Motorola digital cable box or DVD player (one at a time) directly to the Panny via DVI input.

I have read about ISF calibration and finally decided to give it a shot.

I contacted:

Chad Billheimer
www.HDTVbyChadB.com

Chad is supposed to be one of the best ISF Techs around.

I emailed Chad and we discussed things a bit. His price was reasonable (flat fee - no travel charges). He said he would be making his way to South Jersey, so I said what the heck, let's do it.

Chad arrived at my house about 9:15am and left about 1:30pm. He is very professional and thoroughly went through the calibration of my Plasma, DVD player, & digital cable box. He was at it for hours - non stop.

End result is just spectacular. Blacks are black. Gray scale knocks your socks off. The picture is much sharper, vivid, 3 dimensional. Colors are all now spot on.

Its really like seeing the set for the first time. Very nice, way better than any plasma I have ever seen.

Money well spent & highly recommended! :D

He's coming to calibrate my NEC 50" next week and came highly recommended. The above info came off his emails to me.

The standard settings on the Panny become irrelevant, because all of the adjustments are made in the service menus.

Again this is for DVI input:

He started by putting the set in Cinema mode. I was previously using Standard.

Sharpness was set, at the very end of the calibration, to 3.

But here are the settings:

Normalize

Pic menu - cinema

Pic - 10

Bright - 0

Sharp - 3

Color temp - normal

Color mgmt - off

Advanced - on

Advanced settings - all set to "0"

Gamma 2.5

AGC - off

Off topic:

Hi TopShelf17-

I was in Halifax with my hockey club last November -- Beautiful city! Played a couple pick-up games with Bobby Smith and other Moosehead's staff. I'm from Minneapolis where Bobby used to play for the North Stars. The guys are already talking about going back. Great memories already. If I ever had to leave the country I know where I'd go :) .
What's an ISF calibration run $$-wise, roughly? Couple hundred?
I was thinking about getting my Panny 47x54 RPTV calibrated, anyone know a good company in NJ?

Rob
I would have thought a complete calibration would require adjustment of both gain and bias in each of the R, G and B channels, i.e. another 6 parameters. Are these parameters accessible on the Panny? - they weren't mentioned as having been adjusted.

I ask because they are accessible on my Maxent 42X3 Plasma (but only via the RS 232 port) and that is the only way I have been able to remove a green tint. The normal tint control (in the OSD) merely replaces the green with red - just as bad.

I have never seen individual RGB gain and bias controls mentioned in screen specs, but they are very desirable - even necessary. Has anyone got data on which models do (or do not provide) access to these parameters? It will greatly affect any future purchase I make.

Chad calibrated my Panny plasma & I am in Southern NJ, I think he also covers the rest of NJ. Just have to schedule him in advance.

His price on his website for ISF Calibration is $295 flat fee (no expenses).

Again, here is Chad's info:

:p

Thanks for the info.
How long should somebody wait before calibrating their set? I bought the warranty plan from Best Buy and it allows for 1 calibration a year. I have had the set for about 2 weeks and I didn't know if it was too soon to calibrate the set. Should I just wait until the 100 break-in period is over?

Well they said that on the side. I didn't purchase it for that reason. I purchased it because the tv was at a lower price then I thought so I took the savings and but the warrenty. But oh well life does go on. :)
