I'm surprised that no one has posted this yet, but I guess BruZZi is busy and everyone else is off arguing about 42" ED vs HD plasmas. :D It appears that Panasonic has updated their web page with the list prices on the TH-42PHD7UY and 65PHD7UY: http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp...tGroupId=14624 . Many of you may recall that the web page has only listed under the price for those two models as "Coming Soon".

Well, now the web page shows:

TH-65PHD7UY = $15,995 USD (cough, cough)

TH-42PHD7UY = $4795.

Ok, so the 65" 7UY is going to be rather expensive, a hefty bump in price over the 50". I was not planning to get one anyway.

I though the price for the 42" HD might be a little lower, but the next gen consumer version will probably still go for $4995 MSRP or so. Which would still leave a $2K list price gap between the 42" ED and HD models. And in turn, will lead to still more threads on the ED vs HD choice.

Considering the Fujitsu P63 MSRP is $25,000.00; the $15,995.00 MSRP of the Panny TH-65PHD7UY is really quite reasonable

So, Panasonic has set it's actual MSRP on the 42" at $700.00 lower than VA shows MSRP, wonder if VA is going to lower their actual price $700.00. Somehow I doubt it, but it would seal the deal for me. =)

I still haven't a clue why people would buy 42-inch HD models for that kind of premium. The stree prices appear headed for this:

Huge jump from 42 ED to 42 HD (perhaps $2000) and then smaller jump from 42 HD to 50 HD. The performance jump from 42 ED to 42 HD is small, the size jump from 42 HD to 50 HD is mammoth.... I am a fan of price / value and the 42 HD doesn't seem to deliver on that metric. To me at least.

The 65 is priced right. It's 20% cheaper list than the $20K models. I wonder if the online guys will manage a $12K price on one.

Unfortunately I'm one of those stuck with having to buy a 42" HD. We have a rather expensive, and nice entertainment center that will not hold a TV much bigger than a 42" plasma. The opening is only 44" wide. Also, the way our living room is setup the back of the couch is only about 8' from the screen. With a 42" ED (which I had for a few weeks) I see the SDE and I couldn't justify spending over 2k for a TV I was mostly happy with.

On the other hand, I can't justify the extra 1.5 - 2k in cost just to go HD. So, now I'm sitting on the sidelines waiting for prices to come down. Anyways, here is an example of someone that would buy a 42" HD, but not at that premium. In the meantime I'll just get by with my 10 year old curved screen 32" CRT (which gets more and more painful every time I go to my brother's to watch football/baseball in HD)

That MSRP is actually for the TH-42PHD6UY.

The "Our Price" is definitively the correct discounted price from the actual $4795 MSRP.

I started a thread earlier on pre-ordering the 65" Panasonic. So far, no one has set a pre-order price.

Who knows when it will be avalible in the USA is anyones guess. I hear early '05.

Let's see who will be first to offer a pre-order on these. Hopefully at a reasonable price.

Since my wonderful insurance adjuster has literally showered money down on me from my total content loss from H Charley I was going to go with a 42" ED for my bedroom and the 65" HD for the living room. But I didn't think the price would be so much higher than the 50" HD. Evan though I could buy it, I will instead try out the 42" ED in the living room and see how much I like it. Then I may decide to save the extra $$ for a year or two and just go with a second 42" ED. Perhaps a couple of years will see the 50-65" sets drop in price to a more reasonable level. Or maybe I will just go with LCD. LCD seems to be increasing in quality so that $5K I would spend on the 50" Panny will buy me a 65" LCD.

"LCD seems to be increasing in quality so that $5K I would spend on the 50" Panny will buy me a 65" LCD."

???

As I mentioned in another thread, the rate of decline of prices of plasma and LCD are very comparable. And what quality has to do with this is not really clear to me.

On an unrelated note, I am very glad to hear you are recovering from the hurricane. All the best to you and your family.
