Panasonic problem/Costco's return policy

4552 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  QZ1
I purchased a 50" Panasonic on 11/23/06 before they instituted the new return policy. Yesterday my HDMI input went wacky. When I change the channel on my DTV HD DVR the screen goes black for 3 seconds and then displays the HDMI input in the left corner. It does this EVERY time I change the channel and is driving me crazy. Will Costco take a return because I bought it before the new policy? Shouldn't I be grandfathered?

This isn't an issue with the Panasonic. Are you using the HR21-700? If so, check to see if you have NATIVE set to "On". If you do, you can either turn it off, or just select the 1080i and all channels will be converted to that. This will make the channel changing quicker.
Yes, they will honor the old policy which was in effect when you bought the unit.

I had to take my Pioneer 5040 back with audio problems, they gave me my full amount back even with no receipt. They will check when you purchased on their system.

I turned around and immediately bought the Panasonic 58".

You are fine. I returned a set that I bought in Feb of 07 and they gave me a full refund. Bought the 58" Panny right away!

Thanks Mark,

You are probably right...I just switched to native last night. There is one other issue that has been bothering me. I followed all the break in rules but I still have a line from SD channels only on the right side of the screen. the left side is fine. I watch 70% HD content also. Is this an issue that Costco would accept a return on?

The line down the right side of the screen is caused by the DirecTV STB and it's a common complaint. It is not the fault of the TV, and any TV you get to replace it will probably display the same line since it originates with your source.

If you return the TV you're trading in a lifetime return policy which may come in really handy if the TV does go defective in the coming years, while the new TV you get will only have the new 90 day return policy.

I seem to remember someone recently saying they were able to adjust the picture position in their DirecTV STB to slide the image over enough to hide this line introduced by the STB. Maybe look into that before returning the TV . . . .

Randy,

Are you sure about the line? Your saying it's only on the right side? I assumed it was burn in from SD viewing as it is in the same exact spot where the black bars meet the viewable picture. I could have sworn the line stayed there on other source material like DVD. I'll have to check tonight. Do you have the link to the discussion or what I would search for? Thanks.

Oh in your earlier posts you didn't say where this line was located on the screen. The DirecTV STB problem displays a line along the very right edge of the screen where it meets the plastic bezel.

If your line is burned in where the image meets the edge of the 4:3 black bar then that could be either temporary Image Retention which will go away from watching full screen content, and if it doesn't go away then it's probably burn-in damage and may never go away. If the line is burned in, how did you accomplish that? It takes a LOT of 4:3 watching to cause this kind of damage but then again last years PX6xx models aren't as resistant to burn-in as the current PX7xx models are. If it is burned in, have you done anything to attempt to wipe it away?
yes, It is definitly burn in which is frustrating because I don't watch much 4:3 and my brightness and contrast is dialed down. I wonder if I have a defective set. The most annonying thing is when I play a DVD the DVD logo is on the screen for about 5 seconds but the image retention stays for a couple of minutes. I feel this is unsatisfactory.

What settings do you have your DvD input set to?

Not sure...I know the Panasonic settings are dialed down. I wasn't aware the DVD source had a brightness setting.

So basically you are running it in torch mode and wondering why there might be some IR?

You also said you were unaware of a brightness setting?

Please post your DvD input settings so everyone can see what the problem is.

Whatever policy was in effect, on the day of purchase, is what you agreed to, as part of the terms of the sale. They can't change a policy retroactively.
