I got a fancy shmancy Panny RP82 recently (Thanks Paul!) from a board member here.

Only problem is it recognizes 4:3 material with a message, but doesn't change the aspect ratio. On my old Malata, it would display in whatever aspect ratio the source was, but the Panny seems to force it to fill 16:9 on my Mits 52525.

Any way to fix this on the DVD player? Right now I am using narrow view mode, which is annoying since I have to switch through modes based on material.

Actually the message will display when there is 4:3 when there is real 4:3 footage.

A simple test is this, put the a widescreen disc using in the computer and use WinDVD for example in window mode, the window actually change from 16:9 to 4:3 and then back again. A good example is trailers, and FBI and logos.

I could've sworn the RP-82 used to get fooled quite a bit. Mine sure seemed to when I had it, and I thought there were a few posts here (quite awhile back though, so a search is not finding them) that confirmed it did indeed display 4:3 incorrectly occasionally.

Then again, my memory is not what it used to be either. :)

Could be but I've never seen that issue so far.

Since I do have several anime and anime movies series in widescreen. Some of them have 4:3 trailers, logos and FBI warnings. I verified it by changing the aspect on the dvd player to see any differences and indeed, I didn't see any.
