Hi,

a friend of mine has the combo I posted in the title. I helped him configure it but can't get the correct resolution for everything to work fine. I was able to find a resolution that had pretty much no overscan or underscan but the text does not look crisp. I also tried the standard 720p resolution and that resulted in huge overscan, when I tried 1080p the TV showed nothing, not sure why. The tv is connected with a DVI--->HDMI cable and the latest ATI drivers are installed. The tv's native resolution according to the manual is 1024x768 and I tried that with no luck.

I am looking for people with this particular tv or another Panny that is 720p and is not connected with VGA to help me out with that settings they are using.

BTW I searched and found one thread but it was old and conflicting, some said to use powerstrip and others said to use the resolution tool in ATI control panel, and the thread was old.

The Panasonic 42" Plasmas with rectangular pixels (1024x768) are designed for use only as TVs and not for use as PC monitors since Windows and all PC desktop application software assumes displays with square pixels.

If the TV also has a VGA interface then you can probably send it 1024x768 which will not be overscanned but it will be stretched due to the rectangular pixels.

You will not get clear text if you can not use 1024x768 over VGA.

the TV has no vga input only HDMI.....if I can't get clear text I am looking for the next best thing, which resolution results in no over/underscan and the least pixel molestation by the TV itself

If the TV overscans its inputs over HDMI and the TV does not provide you a way to disable the overscan then in order to eliminate the effect of the overscan by unnderscanning the output. The best way to do this is to use the latest drivers and CCC from the ATI Website and hopefully they will have an overscan conpensation slider which you can adjust to underscan the output.

This however will only insure that you can see your entire PC desktop it will not elimnate blurry text caused by sending 720p (1280x720) as the resolution and having the TV rescale that to 1024x768 by deleating every 5th pixel in each row and inseting an additinal row about every 20 rows.

use the ATI catalyst control center to create a "custom resolution" that looks good.

i have a x700 pro set to a wacky resolution (1248X700) which results in a marvelous image and no overscan.

in the ATI custom res section, you can shrink/expand the screen vertically and horizontally to get an image that looks good on your TV, and then define a custom resolution this way.

i actually have 2 different panny plasma (both 720p), and they each have a slightly different custom res that looks darn good (crisp text, no overscan, movies look great).

Heart surgen,

Is it possible that you have 50" Panonic Plasmas whcih have native resolutions of 1366x768 instead of a a model that has a native resoloution of 1024x768 like the OP has?

If not what model number(s) are your units?

If you have 1366x768 models and you are undersscanning the output with a custom resolution in order to compensate for the TVs overscan then you are only getting the appearance of 1:1 pixel mapping and your PC application small font text is not as clear as it would be if you had true 1:1 pixel mapping

what TVs do you have and what is their respective resolutions?

I know about the slider in ATI control panel and I used it to create a custom resolution so no over/underscan occurs but the quality blows....I will try 1248x700 though as a starting point.

I saw an old thread where you recommended someone else some weird resolutions, I wrote those down at work and next time I am at the dude's house I'll try those also.

Let's say I found a resolution that looks good, and adjusted overscan through the service manual.....would the setting be the same for every input?

i don't recall the panny model numbers (i'm at work now). i got one panny about 2-3 years ago, the more recent model was picked up about 6 months ago.

the older model has razor sharp text...if it isn't "pixel perfect", i don't care, it's excellent (i listed the custom resolution for it in the post above).

the newer model, interesting enough), has a slightly different custom res (i apologize, i don;t recall what it is), and while the text is legible and decent, it doesn't seem as crisp as it appears on the older panny!

each plasma is a 50" model.

Once your sitting a few feet away from the screen, running MEEDIOS, the images and the movies are excellent. i tried for months to figure out how to get 1:1 pixel mapping on the first plasma (and on a Sony 70" RPTV), and gave up due to fear of permanent brain injury...
