This is my first post under the plasma section. I have been doing all of my research based on all of your input on here. Thanks to all, but now that I have made a decision I can't seem to find the rock bottom price answer that I need.

I am ready to pull the trigger on this set for $2694 with free shipping. Is this a good price? Once again thanks...this forum is fantastic!

Well you're the one who has been doing all the research so you should know if that is a good price or not. But be careful, the lowest price is not always the best price if the vendor is shady or disreputable, or has a poor DOA policy, or won't take care of you if the TV arrives broken in the carton. This is usually the case with rock bottom prices so check the vendor out thoroughly, and check their policies.

i'm with you, this is the set for me also. i spent the last 6 weeks hooked on the samsung 61a750 until i bought the 42 panny plasma for my bedroom and was blown away. now i am in the same boat, made a decision and looking for a price.

i cant help thinking that waiting a bit will pay off here, the super bowl is around the corner with the new panny plasmas being introduced soon after. i dont know how far they will drop but i am hoping it is closer to the 2000 mark

maybe someone who is in the business or was in this same situation tracking prices at this time last year has some input?

That's what I would call a good price....fantastically GREAT price if you consider what many of us paid for a 42" ED set less than 5 years ago.
Keep in mind that you can't list the vendor in this thread but...like others have said make sure you would be comfortable buying from them before pulling the trigger.

I did it! It ships on Friday the 2nd so I should have it at some point next week. Thanks for the replies.

The main reason I asked the forum about the price is I actually could have purchased it for less ($2593) just 2 days earlier and their website changed the price yesterday. I was very disappointed. They did say they would honor a price adjustment if it were to go back down again.

Thanks for your concern. Yes, it is a very safe and reputable website.

I just purchased my TH-58PZ800U in Denton, TX on 12-27-08 from a "large local retailer".
Initially I paid retail $3699.99. The salesman and I were discussing so many different makes/models on sale that I assumed the TH-58PZ800U was on sale. I got home and did some internet searching, and of course noticed that the model was up to $1000 cheaper on-line, and that the price I paid was the FULL price. I located another local retailer in my area that had the same unit for $2799. To make a long story short, the large local retailer "price matched" the difference and I was refunded almost $1100 to bring the total cost to $2900 (with tax). They also threw in free next day delivery, a $100 value.

So with all that said - I wish we had purchased ours on-line to avoid the hassle. We just wanted the TV quickly because we had already moved our 42" Panisonic Plasma into our bedroom, and my hubby was itching to play with his new PS3. You've made a very smart decision AND you are saving the tax and shipping. Congrats to you!

This TV is fantastic and worth every penny. We initially purchased a Sony Bravia 52" LCD - and not to knock Sony, but we took it back the next morning because our 4 year old 42" Panasonic had way better PQ.

I have been doing a bunch of researching also. Just as I decided on the panny, and told my wife about it .... the price jumps $100! I had told her I would wait till January to buy, now I am concerned that the price will keep edging upwards. It is like an expensive game of "chicken". If I wait a bit longer, do you think the price will drop down again? Or should I get it now to avoid another price hike?

Anyone here have more experience with the nature of the TV pricing business or has the terrible 2008 economy been a game changer?

Thanks,

Yes, however my Cowboys won't be in the playoffs...
I guess that's not entirely bad. Watching Romo fumble on my new 58" display is a wee bit too life-like for me. What a total mess - Philly 44, Dallas 6.....

is there any reason to think the price on this set will drop in the next 2 months? i know the super bowl is coming but that doesnt mean THIS model will go on sale and the new models are coming out but technically this unit came out only 4 months ago as it is

One of the big issues with value of currency in the world economy. Currently the yen has increased in value compare to the dollar which may be the case for your price increase.

We all know that it is tough economic times and it wil be interesting to see how the new TV's are marketed. I really can't see the new stuff being more expensive.

I'm looking too as my Sony 1080i rear projection set died. 8 years old. I will wait until after the Expo and see what the Pre-Superbowl sales have to offer.

where is the sweet spot for the price of this tv? i have been watching DLP sets for a while and kinda had a feel for where to pull the trigger on those but the plasmas are new to me.... how far can this thing drop? is 2000 realistic? what about 2300?

i feel like i am watching the price without any real idea of what is good or when to pounce

i want to get a good deal as much as anybody but i also dont want to waste my time waiting for something that isnt going to happen.... if the set drops to the low 2000's in the next 8 weeks it is worth waiting but if we are only going to see fluctuations of 100-150 dollars it seems smarter to just buy it now and start enjoying it right away

i wish i was watching tv prices last year so i knew how the market worked at this time of year... i would hate to wait for the super bowl to see only the usual string of lousy discounts on vizios and sanyos
