I just picked up a Panasonic XP-30 since a local store

still had some in stock ($220 + tax)

Before buying it, I did read on this forum that you could

dim the display or set-up the unit so that the LCD would

only light up briefly when enter commands from the remote

control

I've studied the owners manual, looked through all the

set-up menu's and still cannot find any reference to the

LCD display

Any help is greatly appreciated....

I read the same thing, but maybe it was for the XP50?

I will open up my XP50 someday soon and will look for the same thing. I also read in the CNET review of the XP50 that there was no way to dim the display, so who is right here?

In any case, it won't be nearly as bright as the LEDs on the front of my Monster Power HTS5000....

I have an XP30 and the function you want is there. ATM I can't remember

where the setting is located. It's not a dimmer, but the display goes

off after a few seconds after the "command" is done while a DVD is playing.

It's under the display menu in the XP30. Check page 19 of the manual, lower right hand side under "Display Menu" - item 'd' is for adjusting the "FL Dimmer".

Is it just me or is the display on the XP 30 pretty much useless at anything more than 3 feet?

Probably so, but other than my receiver I'm not sure why I would need to see the display on any other piece of equipment, especially if the settings are equally visible on the big screen.

TonyS,

Thanks for your reply. I just downloaded the .PDF of

the manual here at work (since my paper copy is at home)

and you are correct....

What boggles my mind is that you can't adjust these

parameters in the various "SETUP" screens....

Which store was this?

Haven't been following this forum until recently when I heard about the availability of the Bravo D1 player. Just got a Pioneer 433CMX plasma and am very interested in getting a DVI capable player but want to wait for the soon-to-be-available Samsung 931.

Anyway, I need an inexpensive player to source the best picture possible until the 931 comes out and I figured the Panasonic XP30 was the one to get. I used the shop search engines in Pricegrabbber and Yahoo and found from Yahoo the XP30 available for $179.99 before shipping. Ordered it yesterday and sheduled to arrive tomorrow. I get the impression from a few of the threads here that the XP30/XP50 are getting difficult to find but during my search I was able to find quite a few stores offering both XP30 and XP50. There's this one store that claims it has a XP50 in stock and is selling it for $229 before shipping. Might have gotten it if I needed another player with DVD-Audio.

You are correct. However, this does not bother me. My XP-30 is "built-in" and I never look at the player's display anyway. I always use the OSD.

Not sure I would like the light turning on and off periodically.

Another possible solution is to cut a piece of colored gel filter or cellophane to the size of the lcd display. Then open the player and sandwich it between the backlight glass and the lcd.

I did this with some blue gel filter and it worked great. It stopped the display from being obnoxiously bright. I've also noticed that some people are obsessed with making their consumer electronic lighting (LEDs, LCDs, etc) blue for some reason. Here's another way to keep your stuff BLUE.

It's "off" when the DVD is playing (if you choose the "dimmer").

It would be nice if there was a way to just keep it off. But, then again,

what do you want for

If you set the FL Dimmer parameter to "DIM" the display

on the XP30/50 will stay OFF all the time (except for a

few seconds when you power up the unit)

If you set the FL Dimmer parameter to "AUTO" the display

lights up for a few seconds everytime you use the remote

control

Thanks for everyone who replied to my intial question....
