Panasonic XP30-What is a fair price?

659 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  PooperScooper
Hi All,

I'm looking for my first Progressive Scan DVD player to use with my new Panasonic TH42PD25 Plasma TV and the Panasonic XP-30 has been recommended several times. It seems that many folks think the XP30 was the pinnacle of picture quality (without the add-on audio features of some of the other Pannys).

I have a line on a "static display" unit at a local B&M store. What is a reasonable price to pay for an XP30?

I would also like to check the player for usage. What is the sequence of keystrokes for checking "laser time" on the XP30?

Thanks for any/all information!

Enjoy,

TIC

I believe that these threads will give you the key sequence and how to interpert the results:

On Ebay, the XP30's seem to be selling for about $275. XP50's are selling for slightly less. RP82's are selling for slightly more.
Tell him you'll give him whatever is a reasonable markdown from MSRP for a demo unit like any other dealer would accept. If he balks, take your business elsewhere. You can get a refurb w/warranty Denon 1600 from dakmart for $299. XP30 + DVD-A, IIRC.

I would pay up to around $300 for the XP30, used or new. I bought mine for $300. I love it. With my Pioneer 64" SD-643HD5 movies look outstanding. This DVD player is all that it is made out to be. Only problem I have had is with burned DVDs. It only plays the first half of them and then it starts to crap out. You will not believe the quality of this DVD player until you try it. If you are strictly looking for a DVD player with video quality, then you better get this one if you have the chance. If you don't like it for some reason, someone will surely give you top dollar for it.

Why would XP50's sell for less? They were the upgraded model with more features.

If you can get the Denon 1600 for $299 w/warranty, then I would go for that since it has better build quality. Both players scored 91 on benchmark tests.

I might be even willing to payer higher than $300 since it is almost impossible to find a player of similar quality for this low of a price range.

I ordered one of these a couple of weeks ago. Order cancelled; they're not getting anymore I was told.

I don't understand this either, but that's how auctions have been closing. I also don't understand why the RP82's are selling for more on ebay than either XP model.

The RP82 is just more well known, but the XP30 and XP50 are more reliable since they hae a newer defect-free spindle motor design. I've seen XP50 auctions go over $300 and some Xp30s at $200 or so. I'd say the average EBAY price for a new XP30 is $250-300. If the unit you saw is used, offer $200-250.
I personally prefer the RP82 because of coaxial.

That's not nice. :) I guess they should remove it from the web page.

I used to own an XP30 until I got a Denon DVD-3800. I would get a Denon 3800 or 2900 used instead of the XP30.

Definitely check them out if you can double your XP30 price range.

Agreed. What irritates me further is that Dakmart charged my card over 2 weeks ago and have not sent through a credit and they do not respond to emails. Next time, I'll look elsewhere.
