If HDCP transmission become a reality in the future, how much effect will the potential down-rezzing have on the Panny 42" ED display?

I understand the down-rezzing could happen to differing levels; if the worst they down rez to was 480p, for example, would this have an effect on the ED display given the resolution limitation it has relative to true HD?

I'm getting ready to purchase and love the ED PQ vs. price ratio. Not sure how important future proofing is for an ED display.

This question is a FAQ.

The answer is this:

(1) It probably makes no difference for an ED display.

(2) It probably makes no difference anyway because full-resolution analog outputs are unlikely to actually go away anytime soon.

(3) It might be nice to have DVI/HDCP because it gives you an all-digital path.

(4) It might be nice to have DVI/HDCP because if the analog *is* down-rezzed, you will get the panel to do the down-rezzing using the DVI/HDCP side, which might be better.

Mark's answer seems reasonable. I would only add that if DVI/HDCP had no potential impact on the Panny ED, Panasonic would probably not be adding DVI/HDCP to the new ED panels due out late this summer. I suspect that Mark's answer #4 may be precisely correct. A critical issue may be how and where the downrezzing gets done. There is a risk buying he current generation Panny ED and HD. But if the price were to drop substantially, it might be worth the risk. My hunch is that Panasonic will manage the supply to help insure that the price doesn't drop drastically below what the new models will sell for. Another interesting question is whether Panasonic will include DVi/HDCP in the industrial/commercial versions of its plasmas or confine it to the retail/consumer versions only? NEC seems not to be includingDVI/HDCP in its new plasmas. They seem to be letting Toshiba add that feature to their rebadged NEC.

Not necessarily, I see plenty of posts around here to the effect of "I'm not buying that, there's no HDCP." Even if it makes no difference, its a "tick list item", if its not there you don't make someone's short list.

Sometimes its easier to give people what they think they want than to try to persuade them that they don't want it.
