Panny 42PX50 and Comcast Cable Card

533 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  martyj19
I'm aware that I can't change the aspect ratio using a Comcast HD cable box, but if I were to instead use a Comcast cable card in a Panny 42PX50 TV, will I be able to control the aspect ratio to fill the entire screen for ALL channels so that I can reduce the chances of burn-in from the black bars?

No, HD Channels still cannot be adjusted
Can digital, but non-HD channels be adjusted though?
Sounds like you do not have your cable box adjusted so you can stretch the standard definition channels.

If it is a Motorola cable box, on the cable box remote, power on, power off, press Menu. Set the "4:3 override" to 480i.

You won't be able to use the TV's aspect control on any 720p or 1080i signal - not even when watching non-HD shows on the HD channels.

If your Comcast box has aspect control you can stretch or zoom the image that way but if it's like my SA8000HD it will look like crap.
I have a Comcast Motorola dual-tuner DVR box. I tried the turn-on, turn-off & press menu sequence that was suggested and nothing happened. Does anyone know if there is any way for me to adjust the aspect ratio of this box?

My wife keeps killing my Samsung plasma TV by constantly watching stuff in 4x3 like the Food Network.

That should work. (Have the TV on through the whole thing so you can see the menus.) At worst you can have the cable company walk you through doing it.
HELP!

I tried your suggestion to set the 4:3 override to 480i and now I get a "Not Supported Mode" message whn I turn on the cable box. And the worst part is that I can't get back to the menu to undo what I just changed.

Well, then it must be that you'll need to use 480p and hope that you can stretch 480p. In fact you can see the menus if you use the little display on the front of the cable box. Now that you know what you are looking at you should be able to do it that way. Sorry for the misstep.
Okay, thanks. I somehow was able to get the TV to recognize the display and I changed the menu to set 4x3 to "Stretch" and that did the trick.

Now that I know that I can change the default aspect ratio for at least the non-HD channels, my burn-in fears have been greatly alleviated and I won't have any qualms about purchasing a new Panny 42PX50 sometime soon. Otherwise I might have opted for an LCD solely due to its resistance to burn-in.
Another happy ending. Sorry again that the extra hassle happened. Enjoy your new TV. It is reportedly a fine unit.
